Ummm, cause we're just awesome?? because we have contests?? because there's always someone posting something cool? because there's always someone (me) who needs advice? because we give the forum PERSONALITY???? and an amiable personality (most of the time). my vote goes for that one.
well, i find the tone here relaxed in general, easy going and friendly. That is probably one factor which attracts many starting collectors. By contrast the tone in some other numismatic forums ranges from the highly exclusive, even pedantic, to perhaps somewhat aggresive with little tolerance for the average collector. I know that is what attracted me to this forum.
pe⋅dan⋅tic –adjective 1.ostentatious in one's learning. 2.overly concerned with minute details or formalisms, esp. in teaching. Thanks to dictionary.com for those of us who don't have the benefit of an esteemed education.
Sorry Andrew! i didn't mean to be pedantic by using the word "pedantic" (it probably has something to with learning english as a foreign language like i did. They teach you all of the funny words which nobody uses.....
1. Just one of the points I was going to make. And I suspect due to so many people out of work they now have time to use the internet more. 2. The new baby dollars have started many new collectors and they look for coin forums to ask questions since they are new. 3. The State Quarters have started many new people on coin collecting so they too look on the internet for info about thier new hobby 4. The internet itself is still fairly new. Many, many people that used to collect coins and their only source of info was newsleters, magazines, coin stores and coin shows now have started to learn the internet. 5. Almost all coin forums have grown substantially. Not sure how many members there are here but PCGS likes to show off the membership on thier web site and I think the last time I saw it was well over 28,000. 6. In a way excessive memberships can create problems on a forum of any kind. For example on the PCGS forum it you ask a question and it isn't answered in a hour it is lost due to massive additional posts. 7. On this forum there are basically serious coin collectors, me excluded, and on other forums there are a lot of idiots. Some put me in the later notation. 8. Older people are now finding out how to use the internet and this hobby is full of us older people.
1. There's a nice even spread of ages here. Any age group feels welcome. 2. We're all a bunch of saps.
It was nice and peaceful before you got here spock  Heck, I can remember when 20 posts a day on the entire forum was a lot ! To tell ya the truth, I think what makes this forum popular is the rules. Coin Talk is not like other forums. We have set rules and stick to them. We insist that everyone is treated with respect at all times. We don't allow SPAM posts, vulgarity or cursing. We encourage and stimulate a friendly, family like atmosphere where all ages and levels of knowledge are welcome. But most of all, what makes this forum popular is you guys - the members. For without you, we are nothing but just another web site. You, the members, are what makes this a community. My hat's off to all of you Yeah, even spock
Well Ruben, not to be pedantic, but ostentatious means something like snobbish, somebody who holds himself in too high esteem, etc. (if i knew who to put in a smiley here, i would!)
Other than those excellent and on the "money" reasons, you forgot the biggest reason of all, and really why Spock is here . . . . It's FREE! Did any Trekkie ever see Spock say, "I'll pick up the next round!"? Or, "It's on me!"? Vulcans are cheapskates! Ribbit
New coin designs, more people taking time to enjoy lifes simple (or not so simple) pleasures, great group of people(and toads, frogs, birds, bunnies,Vulcans, etc.) More internet users and good marketing for a great site!
I agree with much that has been posted earlier. In addition to the obvious (good info and advice), folks here are genteel. That's one thing I really like. Folks disagree, but respectfully. Disagreement is important. We're not here to rubberstamp everything said. Be thankful for the moderators. I hit an unmoderated whitewater website occasionally, and believe me... there's a big difference.
Man, you guys are killing me with all these big words. I hang out here because I'm getting a lot of good information about Morgan Dollars, and a host of other topics I never even thought about. Great coinage education to be had from here. Rodger
