Not that it's a bad thing at all! I can remember when this place was a fairly sleepy forum. These days, it seems like things are really hopping around here. Anyone else notice this? Why do you suppose that it is the case?
Thats a good question Leadfoot. I think its because coin collecting is getting to be a more popular hobby, as well as signing up to talk on various forums such as this one. I think that with the conception of the Statehood Quarters and the Prez Dollars there have been some new collectors born which may have sparked an interest in other numismatic areas...
There is an uptick in activity, and I don't think it is external forces. I think that people see an unpretentious chatter, laughing, squabbling even, along with some great informational posts, and they want to join the flock. We are a real community and group. Ruben
Hmmm, As we get older, time goes by much faster:kewl:.....so it might seem like things are busier:rolling:....as we are all getting older....heck maybe Peter has stats! Jim
Yeah, if I was a Vulcan, it would seem like time stops. Too Boring! You have been mind melding with those verdigris nanobots too much!:vanish: Jim
Why has the forum become so popular? I believe that the popularity and increased traffic can be attributed to a number of factors: The availability of expertise and experience in a relatively arcane field. Members here can identify and opine on the condition and value of a wide variety of numismatic items; Though the hobby is popular, there are many areas of the country where coin enthusiasts are few and far between. This forum is a target-rich environment for people who want to discuss coins; The anonymity of membership lets members enjoy their hobby without revealing their valuable collections to potential predators; Communications here take place without respect to space and time. Threads span out over days and across borders. This convenience enables members to join a conversation at their convenience. Lastly, it enables interaction with amusing and colorful characters of the coin world from a safe distance....just kidding....sort of. I am very happy to be a member of this forum, and am grateful to the moderators and facilitators who make it possible. Best wishes to you all.
All very good points, however, for those members who are under the age of adulthood, this fourm's administration provides a sense of security for the Parents that want to know what their child is up to! It is well moderated and updated. It also speaks volumes for the member base of quality people with (as it appears) little criminal intent. I hope I am correct on this one for sure! It provides the average person with little or no knowledge of coins or currency the ability to tap into a large knowledge base! It does have a community feel, more so for the more regular members that post comments time after time. It has also allowed for new frienships to be developed and connections to to network are established as well. And in the sense of final frontiers, it has even brought Spock1 to us...we now all know a Vulcan! Just my view points. RickieB
I think that sums it up pretty well. What could be better than fun and informative? A big thumbs up for Cointalk. :thumb:
Good people here with entertaining exchanges, plus the best knowledge base of anywhere I know of. One does get sort of a "community" feel here after awhile. It even makes it more so when you go to a coin show and actually meet some of the other members.
well thank you lately people have been trying to send me back to vulcan but i refuse to budge lend me that big gun will ya the phaser is out of batteries i need to go make some creature cake
I think part of the reason is time. Life is frequently too busy to join a local club. Clicking to an internet site is much more time efficient.
I can't speak for other people, but I decided to make my home here because I did not like the pretentiousness and meanness of one major TPG's board, the other major TPG board isn't as active, and that this board seemed to be the most welcoming and best moderated.
I prefer this site because the posts pretty much stick with coin topics. Yeh, there is a bunch of social chatter, but generally only after a topic has been reasonably discussed. The chatroom and discussion board over at "that" auction site has so much OT chatter that you have to work to find the good stuff. But still some very knowledgeable people so I don't ignore it completely.
Jello also raises an interesting point. If a forum is active, it is a much better place. I think that there is a snowball effect. The more active a forum gets, it multiplies the activity. I also think that the Coin Talk forum has the best tools of any coin collecting forum. Most of the coin collecting forums out there have not been re-designed since the late 1990s.
The reason this forum seems like it has become more popular , more of a comfortable situation , you could through in a little humor once in a while ,there are a wide variety of knowledgeable people here too The interest in the hobby has increased more younger ones are coming into the picture, they want to know what kinds of coins they have error coins etc etc There's just more to offer here and it's a larger coummunity of peope involved . I do feel this is more of a close knit family of friendly people and the new comers could see that and they want to hang . More people seem that they are willing to help here a quicker responce to the threads and pretty accurate ones too . I love this forum I really feel this is my family of numismatic friends. One last thing I like to bother GD alot and bug him that;s my main reason I;m here Jazzcoins Joe
Several factors. More retirees..the elderly are retiring more rapidly these days, many are taking an early retirement offered when their employers downsize. With the economy shrinking, folks are getting laid off. Something like 2.5 million last year alone. You gotta figure many collect coins or used to and visit here to fill their day. Folks are also working less overtime at their jobs due to the economic slow down so that gives them more time to play around on the computer.
