I like Millions of you , own a 1964 Proof Set . I've had this since 1989 and wonder if the Cost will ever go up ? I see on Ebay that their asking anywhere between about $20-$30 or so . Are these worth more individually or in the package with the paperwork ?
I might add Accented Hair Half dollar to that as well (again be sure before opening) ETA: I don't think OP set has the accented hair
Unless the set has a two sided cameo in it or really high grade Accented Hair Half Dollar, it's not smart to cut them up. I have found that these mint packs provide decent protection, provied you stack a lot of weight on top of them. That causes the edges of the coins to cut through the package, which not good. The worst storage device for Proof coins are albums made of paper and cardboard. Run of the mill coin envelopes are not good either.
I have 2 Kennedy accented Hair coins. One is in the original mint packaging with the paperwork. Best to keep it that way than without.
People do stuff like put rubber bands around these sets a squish them together. The coins are Proofs and they do have sharp edges on their rims that can cut through the plastic or mylar. When that happens, air can get in and tone the coins. Pin holes can be especially damaging because they concentrat the air in one palce.
Anything you put on top of those sets that can squish them down is not good. I don't know how else to say it.
https://kennedyhalfdollars.net/1964-accented-hair-variety-kennedy-half-dollar/ The quickest way to tell is that an Accented Hair should have a longer base on the bottom of the "I" in Liberty . It is fairly noticeable
Coin prices are dictated by a greater market. As collectors, all we can do is go along for the ride. As more and more of these sets get broken over the decades, the less there will be. I tend to keep my sets as is UNLESS they contain something interesting. When the time does come to sell them, it will also be easier for me to do so.
