Hey all, just wanted to share some finds k picked up tonight that I’m pretty excited about! I swear when ever I get a higher grade coronet head in my hand a fake alarm goes off.. I did weigh it and it’s about .4 grams under weight.. I do only use the lowest grade scale ever invented though which has weighed authentic coins as what they should be and also authentic coins very low or high.. I do see a line cutting through the second star left of the date bite when I look at it through the loupe it becomes almost impossible to see especially the closer I get. This wouldn’t be a die break of some sort would it? It’s not a scratch and it’s not raised either that I can feel or see at least. Also sadly I know the 1802 cent has some sort of environmental stuff going on with it but the details are nice! Thank you and please let me know what you guys think!
The Draped Bust is okay but I REALLY like the Matron Head. I believe that is indeed a scratch touching on that second star to the left of the date. But I don't think it detracts materially from the overall stunning beauty of the coin. By the way, congrats on the bids on your Coronet Head yesterday. So glad for you.
It’s a really nice piece I couldn’t believe it when I saw it today lol. I looked at it with 10Xs and 20Xs and could not see any signs of a scratch. Like I said it almost disappears when you look through the loupe I haven’t seen it that’s why I think possibly something with the die? I’m not sure.. and thank you that means a lot!! The gentlemen that won sounds pretty excited about it also can’t wait for him to get it!
What would anyone put this as a grade? I’m thinking AU but not quite well trained with the large cents yet to determine this, just going off the pcgs photograde website.
N-14 was a Randall hoard variety, but the Randall hoard coins were MS and although nice I don't think it would go MS.
Is this the N-14 variety? Still learning all of the varieties but haven’t found a good source to teach about them very well with pictures and description
Ah common at least a 55? Haha. I think low to mid AU is fair she has a few dings in the reverse. The person I purchased from said that they have a few uncirculated old large cents not braided hair type.
Yes it is. Best source of information for the middle dates (1816 - 1839) is probably The Cent Book by John Wright, who is a member here. Best place for images online, which unfortunately does NOT contain diagnostic descriptions of the varieties, is probably the online catalog of the Dan Holmes Collection Part II on the Goldberg auction archives. Great thank you I’ll check online now to see if I can’t find the book and find the other sources as well. I’ve had the toughest times with the old cents and feel like I’ve had some decent varieties but we’re unable to identify. Thank you!
So I found the book. Not cheap and almost no where besides amazon has it in stock that I could find lol.. dang
Try and contact John here on CoinTalk, you can get it direct from him cheaper than the one on Amazon, and he will even sign it for you if you want I believe. Opps, just checked John has it listed for $125 postpaid, but $100 postpaid for EAC members. I'd still check with John though, I know he has copies on hand.
