Yes, I caught the distinction between Sicily and San Marino, but I'm still jealous. Actually, I think I'd even rather see Sicily. Particularly if they would let me metal detect there! ;)

(Which is about as likely as me learning to play the harpsichord with my earlobes.)

Looks like maybe a Roman Imperial or Provincial As, circa 1st or early 2nd century, is my vague, non-expert impression. The bust looks a little like Caligula to me.

You might have better luck on the Ancients forum with that one. To save you the hassle of retyping all that, I can move your post into a new thread there if you want me to. Just click the “report” link under that post to request that if you do.

(I’d still keep a spot in this giveaway for you.)

PS- your question is perfectly fine here, and valid as a contest entry. I only suggest the Ancients forum because you’re more likely to get a good answer there, is all.

Edited: I moved wrexx’s coin to Ancients, as suggested. Since it is now gone from this thread, this post (#144) will now stand in as the giveaway entry for @wrexx. So wrexx, your lucky number in the drawing will be 144. ~RWS/“LM”

The drawing will be held tonight (well, technically Monday morning, in the wee hours). We’re still open for entries until midnight Eastern US time.

    Lordmarcovan,
Appreciate your help with moving the post and the possible id of the coin. I was just in another part of the forums doing more hunting and stumbled across, I do hope I get this correct, >a Decennalia AD 24. The author did mention it was a very common coin. Just thought I would see if you might be familiar with that coin and possibly see something that would make you think a good place to start or even better yep that's it. It looked promising to me but as does everything.
Once again thanks for the help.

    ENTRY POST.
I'm really looking forward to hearing what the responses to this question will be.

    Is it an ancient?

Yes, it is very likely an ancient; I strongly suspect Roman, first century. It might not be worth much in that condition, but there is a high probability it is over 1,800 years old.

Here is his post in its new location, if you want to read what the Ancient forum folks have to say about it.

Dunno for sure, but I did do some musing on the Ancients forum repost. We’ll have to wait and see what the more experienced members there have to say about it.

Thank you for the point towards the right direction to learn further information regarding this possible ancient interesting coin.

I’m afraid the chances are very slim that it’s gonna be worth much of anything at all monetarily, in that condition, but it’s got some history, if only we can pin down what the type is.

It’s an intriguing enigma. I can see why @wrexx has been puzzling so hard over it.

    And we have a winner!

The random number generator pulled #98.

Post #98 here was made by me, on behalf of one of the Collectors Universe entrants.
So it appears that by random chance, the CU forum folks got lucky and snagged the prize for the second month in a row.

Not to worry, though, CoinTalk friends. I will have a new giveaway launched very soon, and another "instant giveaway" not long after that.

The next regular monthly "pick your prize" giveaway (#48) is up now, and there is a new instant giveaway (#49), as well.

The instant ones usually don't last long before someone guesses the trivia answers, so #49 might be closed by the time you read this, but #48 will run through throughout November and we will do its drawing in early December.

Just peeking to see whether you were holding an "Instant" contest while the rest of us were cursing the Mint website.....
