More "going through the hoard" finds folks, but this post is a bit "unusual" . . . .
    (Aren't all my posts "unusual?")

Anyway, I am sure you all have them. Old coins that never see the light of day. Either they're too damaged, worn, or ugly to bother taking photos of them. They are SOOOO "compromised" even the bullion value might be affected.

Anyway, here are my Top 5 Road Kill Dollars (with two added for "honorable mention) . . . . .

Please feel free to post up YOUR uglies . . . .

At the #5 Spot, is a 1890-S Morgan Dollar. This coin has been "encapsulated" in a plastic keychain. It appears to have been sealed in this capsule with a drop of mercury applied to both sides due to the extreme gloss and sheen. It was difficult to capture just how shiny this coin is, it almost looks "chromed."

Taking up Spot #4 is a 1922 Peace Dollar. This coin looks nice and original, but has some type of "sputtered" debris across the obverse and heavy buildup of dirt (DNA?) across the reverse with an unattractive toning overall.

Coming in at Spot #3 is 1881-S Morgan Dollar. This poor unfortunate coin was taken out of a necklace pendant holder many years ago. The obverse has the typical wear you would find on a jewelry coin, but the reverse was only partially enclosed. The protected ring around the exposed center exhibits a phenomenally strong strike and intense original mint luster. From what I can see of the protected areas, I can only imagine this coin had to have been a MS65 or above before it was subjected to a life of degradation and (dis)wear . . . . .

Coming in at Spot #2 is 1921 Morgan Dollar. The pictures tell the story. This is the quintessinal "road kill" coin. I can only imagine that it was found in a gravel parking lot after an early 1900's county fair. Who knows it's history. If only coins could talk . . . . .

And coming in at Spot #1 is 1923-S Peace Dollar. I have NO idea what was done to this coin to create it's appearance. It is dull grey, mottled and rough, singularly the ugliest dollar I own. The finish made me name this coin my "Zombie Dollar" due to it's "undead" ashen tone.

Again, the photos tell the story. Such a shame. I question whether the damage actually reduces it's melt value . . . . . . .

Feel free to "click" on the images for an enlarged view.

    "Enjoy" . . . . . .

And now, the "Honorable Mention" dollars.

These two Peace Dollars, a 1922 and a 1922-S didn't make the "road kill" list, but were worthy of honorable mention for their sheer wear and heavy handed cleaning.

At least I don't think their bullion value has been affected (much) by their condition today.

These two brutalized Mercs were in the last batch of junk silver I purchased. Since I purchased that last batch of silver, I cashed out a bunch to finance a double eagle. I was too embarrassed to include these two in my cash out silver.
