Nice toned '42 Walker with light circulation wear in the usual spots. How would you grade this, dirt and all? Photos taken through a Mylar flip so there's a little glare from that, here and there. Thanks!

I'd give it an EF-45, but from my view it seems stained rather than toned. It is a well struck walker, however.

I agree about it being stained, it has the look of a metal detector find. I would say the coin has VF details and light corrosion.

Thanks. Then, stained it is. That's around where I have the strike and grade, too, BTW.

The baked-on dirt would suggest it was sitting in the ground for a spell. I'm curious. There's a lot on this coin, especially on the the reverse, you can't make out, due to the dirt. Rather, you're left to have to infer what's beneath that, from the overall look of the rest of the coin, that isn't as obscured. Are you basing your VF grade primarily just on the head, breast and right-hand wear, i.e., which you can pretty much see? Just curious...

I see some wear on the flat-spot beside the T in liberty and slight wear on the sun rays, perhaps that lead him to grade it a VF.. although the hand detail might suggest EF?... i'm still kind of new to the Liberty Half grading.

There is plenty that can be seen on the reverse as well. The eagle's head, the wings, leg and branches. I based my estimate what can be seen, not what cannot be seen. Wear patterns tend to generally be pretty consistent. Once you see a ceratin amount of wear in a few places, it's a pretty safe bet it exist elsewhere as well.

So am I, that's why I asked. Photo-grading can only get you so far and isn't a substitute for having gone over thousands of these in-hand.

I think they were just trying to cut down on the UV light. And you can't hold that against the grade. ;)

Yeah, I meant to say right arm. I'm so lost on these, I can't even reply to the answers right. :headbang:

I sort of agree with GDJMSP except IMO the coin has EF details and light corrosion.

    Very best regards,
