Hey everyone, I'm working on a site to generate an up to date price guide from auctions around the web. It currently archives ebay and teletrade auctions for PCGS graded coins. I hope to add NGC in the near future. Let me know if you have any comments or suggestions. Site is very beta, and looks best in firefox. http://www.cointrends.org -Justin
Welcome to CT. Well, it's not a bad idea and you have made a start. It would be nice to know a bit more about the prices realized that you list, things like how many coins were averaged and how recent the auctions were. Will your prices show trends? (In other words, will they reflect the most recent sales or will you continue to average recent sales and old sales?) Will your prices include buyer fees (e.g., 15% BF for coins bought on Teletrade)? A nice feature would be to be able to click on a price and see all the data (auction date, auction venue, bidding activity (number of bids or BIN), TPG service, etc.). I noticed that the Stats and Charts portions of your site pertain only to your site. That is really of no interest to collectors and would only be of interest to you. Good luck with your project. And keep us posted on your progress.
I forgot to mention that the prices displayed are the averages for that cointype/grade. The prices are clickable and when clicked brings you to a page showing the last 10 sales with links to the auctions, sale date, sale price, book value. The first real graph i want to add is sales price vs book for each auction company. I was also thinking about adding top 10 overvalued and undervalued coins when compared to book. Thanks for you input. -Justin
3's? great idea and good start! One of my main interests are 3c silver and I saw no 3 anything. Silver, nickel or gold. Also, would be nice have some color coding to the columns or grades every so often, so you don't have to scroll back up to see what column you are in. Not trying to be critical, as I know it's beta. Good luck and thank you for your hard work!
Good Job That's a great website. The only question I have is: Doesn't Teletrade charge a 15% buyers fee on all auctions? So for many coins that could greatly increase the overall price. I am not sure if you take that into account while setting up the prices.
I just added 3cent silver and 3cent nickel queries. There is currently no 3 dollar gold in the database, so i'll have to wait to build this query. I've been workin on a solution to the scrolling issue. I'd really like a way to lock the top grade row so it stays in place as you scroll. Color coding the column is a good idea i didn't think of. For the teletrade data; i'm grabbing the prices realized for the completed auctions. This should have the 15% buyers fee included. I'm trying to completely automate the collection of auction data, but it's been dificult to say the least. Thanks for your input.
Long overdue, but I believe that eBay in particular considers harvesting of their auction data a violation of their user agreement and probably also claims intellectual property rights as well. I won't say anything if you don't...
Are you including realized prices from the Auction Houses or just the stuff from interent auctions ? It is a lot of work to do this, but without it there can be no accuracy. That's kind of why nobody has ever done this except in book form. It's just a tremendous amount of work.
It's currently just internet auctions. Can you recommend any good auction data sources? I'm up to the challenge of automating the import of other auction data. -Justin
There's a bunch ! This Google search will provide more than you ever want. Coin Auctions But I would be sure to include Stack's, Bowers & Merena, Superior Galleries, Ira & Larry Goldberg, Steinbergs, Heritage, CNG, VCoins, and that just name's a few.
I've been eyeing heritage as the next datasource. I'm only focusing on U.S. coins right now to keep the DB size down. If the site takes off i'll get better servers and expand the cateogires. Thanks for your input -Justin
Great site, well done. 2 minor points--Didn't see the Standing Liberty Quarters and Lincoln is spelled wrong on the pop down menu.
Everyone was right about the teletrade auction prices. I updated all of the teletrade auction prices to include the 15% buyers fee. I fixed the typo for the Lincoln cents and added the following categories. Draped Bust Quarter Capped Bust Quarter Liberty Seated Quarter Barber Quarter Standing Liberty Quarter Shield Nickel Liberty Nickel
Made a lot of progress the last few days. Heritage auction data is now in the db. More specifically, I'm importing the fun auction results which i believe consist of ~ 13000 lots. Another big change is adding a scroll bar and locking the header row so you can see the grade as you scroll. It's a bit buggy and i'm still working on it. Here is a quick page to show the top 10 coins under PCGS @ fun (NOTE: i've only compiled about 1/50th of the auction data). http://cointrends.org/ha_stats-fun.php Have a great weekend everyone. -Justin
Justin, This is a great idea. I hope that you are able to develop a great site for coin price trends. Does eBay have anything that you can pay to see compiled completed sales data?
I haven't found anything which was my reason behind creating the site. I also believe ebay only tracks around 30-60 days when you use search the completed auctions.
