    Hello all,

I found a pretty nice piece that may be of interest to me besides the fact that someone dipped the coin in some sort of paint or I’m unsure if it’s artificial toning? I don’t have the coin in hand so I am not sure and neither is the seller. Is there any safe way of removing this without harming the coin or chancing it? I will only pursue it if so but if not I don’t want to waste anyone’s time!

    Thank you in advance! 5E36C6F5-5D78-4CD0-9D25-6D48A06C5AA6.png 3AB3E50E-D472-46FB-BDAA-73FF059DB66A.png 47C2A3D2-BE56-4717-9967-0E5A8163D783.png 3557345A-EFBB-46CA-A486-B0DBA842A394.png

This coin has obviously been cleaned. Striped all the patina off and now has the that strange red orange cleaned look to it. There is no way to get that patina back. This coin is now damaged. Certainly not worth full price now. Wait for more opinions on value.

Yuck. A cleaned coin takes such an ugly hue!

One approach would be to send it to a TPG for conservation. Or take it to a coin show and consult the experts there.
Another approach would be to say not much to lose by trying it yourself. Very carefully apply a tiny bit of solvent to the painted place and see what happens. The toning will grow back eventually.
A third approach would be to say it is a gorgeous coin and love it just the way it is now.
That is my three cents worth.

Where does anyone see paint on that coin?

Isn’t that the normal color of the coin on the rim the dark brown where it is worn? It looks as if there’s something on the coin and it wore through around the edges, I could be mistaken though all I have our pictures.

Around the edges you see the darker brown? I thought that was the coin underneath whatever the red shiny layer is, am I wrong? That’s why I thought it had paint over it

That sounds like a whole lot of work I may just wait for one that is not covered in this stuff in the future, I was getting it for buy and sell but only if I could safely remove whatever that red stuff is..

It is a problem coin. Save your money for a problem free coin. You will be happier down the road.

If you have not bought it, pass. If I owned it, I’d store it in one of my old “sulfur paper” envelopes and wait five or six years. The Gimbals Department store coin counter used to sell coins in them.

If it’s covered with lacquer, which might be the case, nothing will change, but if it’s just bare copper, you might get a good result. It was worked for me.

Yea I’m going to pass on it because they’re asking 185$ with a negotiable price and I would resell it eventually more soon then later.. probabaly not worth anyone’s time or money but definitely nice grade!

The Braided Hair half cents come nice, and collectors do not beat down the doors to buy them. These coins are not quick sellers, especially when they have problems.

Good to know! I thought they would because I don’t see them all that often compared to the large cent

As the Red Book has long said, “All half cents are scarce.” It used to say, “ the series has never enjoyed popularity. (Paraphrasing). That is especially true for Braided Hair type.

That’s good to know, they never sell for that much out of my store even when they are AU or higher. This is excluding the 57’. I prefer the coronet heads myself

What is the wearing at the rim of the coin? I thought that would be underneath whatever the coin looks to be covered in. That’s why I thought it had a layer of something in it
