This site has helped me identify a few things and now I want to start a coin collection.

So first one is a 1946 dime I believe it’s silver and the second is a 1971 Kennedy half dollar.

Welcome to Coin Talk. The dime is 90% silver and the 1971 D Kennedy half is a clad coin. If you're going to start a collection you should buy a copy of the RedBook. The official title is "A Guidebook of United States Coins" by R.S. Yeoman; Whitman Publishing. It's considered the Bible of Coin Collecting, loaded with so much useful information. Best of Luck in your pursuit. :)

Excellent suggestion re: Red Book, Thomas. Pay no attention to the pricing, though - unless you're an insurance appraiser. Values listed are almost always extremely overinflated.

And sometime they can be outdated by the time the book is released . I , now rely on online pricing to get the current values and actually you have 60 cents . LOL

I like the dime! Even though it is worn, it is undamaged, and has pleasing, nice even wear. I would be glad to add that to my silver stack.

The clad (non-silver) Kennedy Half Dollars, such as your 1971-D, are generally only worth face value. I do not collect Kennedy Half Dollars unless they are silver.

But collect what you like. We all have different tastes.

Yep, U.S. coins used to be made out of silver. I am old enough to remember spending them. You could also go to a bank and exchange paper dollars for silver dollars. Oddly enough, they had Morgan Dollars more often than Peace Dollars.

That dime is 74 years old. When I was a young numismatist (YN) in the mid 1960’s a dime that age would have been a Seated or Barber Dime. Those of us who have been collectors for years do not put a lot of stock in a 1946 Roosevelt Dime because some us actually plucked one out of circulation to put in an album. I did that. Now it’s something that is “exotic” for a new collector because of its age. It’s an interesting perspective.

Lol I had to look some words up from this. I actually have a $1 silver certificate I found in circulation, I thought it was super cool so I have kept it for some years. It’s only worth a couple bucks but man I think it’s so cool because of the history behind it. Crazy I see the half dollar go for hundreds on ebay, although they don’t sell to often. Was really fun to read that thanks! It’s crazy holding something so old in my hands, I just find it fascinating. I want to look into some old roman coins to get a great collection going but they are expensive!

Thanks! I love the dime and the fact that it’s silver gives it an interesting factor to me. I had to grab that half dollar because the condition looked so good and I just thought it was cool lol.
