Hi guys, I submitted a request I believe they call it, to Great Collections about sending my 1939DDR to them for auction and please read the copy of what they send me back. After reading what you guys told me this coin is worth and reading this company's "estimated value ( $35 to $50) " I think I need to put this company on my DON'T GO HERE list. Wanted to share this with you in case you didn't know. Ohh, the photos I added here are the same ones I sent them.
Certainly they tried to lowball you. What is this, closer to a 175 dollar coin? Maybe 200? I don't know much of the nickel doubled dies as compared to Lincoln cents.
I am not sure why you are angry with them, they gave you conservative price estimates for the coin variety in question, the 1939 Doubled Monticello Jefferson Nickel. You are claiming that they told you that the coin is worth $35-$50. That isn't correct. They said that moderately circulated coins are worth that amount. Your coin is clearly in the AU range and would fall in the category of lightly circulated which they gave and estimate of $100-$150. In my experience, AU Doubled Monticello's sell for $150-$200, but perhaps they are including the grading costs and consignment fees in their estimates. The long and short of it is that if you consign that coin with them, you will probably realize a price in their stated range of $100-$150.
That's right. I read the reply again. They called it "pretty nice." That takes it out of the moderately circulated range and puts it squarely in the lightly circulated and up range. I take back what I said. What they told you was in the ballpark.
I was told by professionals right here after I posted photos of my 1939 DDR Nickel that it's value was in the $1200 - $1400 range.
eddiespin and Lehigh96, like I just mentioned to Evan Saltis, I posted photos of my 1939 DDR Nickel on this coin club, which I totally enjoy being a member of, I've learned a lot here, and after I posted the photos a few professionals from this club gave me an estimate for this coin as $1200 - $1400 so it was a real head shaker for me to see that representative from Great Collections give me his estimate of $35 - $50 or $100 - $150
I don't remember it that way. Somebody said that the prices of that DDR had dropped and that spawned an argument about gem grade (MS65) 1939 Doubled Monticello's that were in the $1200-$1400 range. I also distinctly remember telling you that your coin was XF, maybe low AU, which would put you squarely in the price range of $100-$150 that GreatCollections quoted you.
I have linked your original thread below. Every post is numbered. Please re-read the thread and tell me the # of the post that says that YOUR nickel is worth $1200-$1400. 1939 NICKEL (REVERSE 1940) ALSO DD In post #7, I mentioned the $1200-$1400 price range, but I was talking about MY 1939 Doubled Monticello which is graded NGC MS65. I was not talking about your coin and later in post #16, I specifically said your coin graded XF, maybe low AU.
I think it could come back as AU or XF details....I see a scratch on the obverse & reverse. That being said I like the coin.
Lehigh96, you mentioned this type of coin goes for $1200 - $1400, now I am missing the grade difference in the price range from my coin and one valued at $1200 - $1400??
Condition is everything, that is the whole point of having coins graded. I'm not trying to demean your coin but there are plenty of examples of this variety in the AU range and the price guide reflects that. A gem grade example of this variety looks like this: You can't expect your AU example to demand the same price as a gem grade coin.
Well I certainly apologize for getting it wrong....It's tough when your an old fart! So I have a XF or a low AU that goes for around $100 - $150.....Thanks again Lehigh96 and again, sorry I got it wrong!
We didn't try to hustle anyone! We're an auction house, we're not trying to buy the coin, we want it to sell for as much as possible. The OP sent us one image showing 30% of one side of the coin. We gave our estimate - which if the whole coin is lightly circulated, I think we agree on. AU (straight graded) examples sell for between $120-$200 regularly. - Ian
