I found this in a penny roll I got from the bank and I have no idea what kind of error this is. I've searched it and have not seem anything like this. Does anyone know or let me know if it's worth keeping or it's just junk.
Even though its heavily worn/damaged its still an s mint and from the 60s i would keep it for reference.
Crazy . . . A 1964 S would be quite the find. I would love it to be S, it looks like an S, but can that be? My heart says S, my mind says D.
It's definitely worth keeping. You should get it looked at by someone who specializes in error coins, maybe check out CONECA or Wexler's Coins, just to be sure. Get a close-up of that mint mark, too.
Welcome to CT. For future reference, it is best to post photos FULL IMAGE (when uploading a photo, two buttons appear; thumbnail, and Full Image, click full image) so members can easily compare and enlarge them for better views. Interesting coin and not sure how it was damaged or why there is a ghost image of Lincoln on the reverse. @paddyman98 care to elaborate?
At first I though it was a Indirect Image Transfer (Ghosting) but I wasn't sure. When Fred stated damaged on both sides I felt like the issue must be post mint also. How? I don't know. I changed my previous answer.
Since we weren't there when it was flattened, we can't tell 100% exactly how, but it doesn't matter, imo. Probably put in a vise - but who cares ?
The front is flatten and the back isn't badly damage. Yea my bad I thought I put 1964, I just notice that. Thanks!
So as we all can see the image on the front is very flat. However the image that appears on the back of the lincoln cent has a tremendous amount of hight and depth to it . It looks like a topographical map for lack of a better word. Although the front is in pores shape the back is quite nice when compared to the front every one has asked for close up photos of the Lincoln cent so I've done my best here you go
