Well, this Thursday I went to my very first F.U.N coin show and found this really nice guy who let met look through his bag of $50 face barber halves. At first he said he was only going to sell the bag as a whole for $700. After a little persuasion I managed to talk him into letting me browse through it and pick out some that i wanted. We settled at $8 each. I eneded up with 11 or so that i really liked, one being this 1904-S barber half, along with a lesser quality 04-S. I would call it a score. He seemed pleased as well, so Win-Win situation for sure. I would grade it a VG-8, what do ya'll think?

I don't understand what makes that VG. I don't see any of the letters in LIBERTY, which red book says makes it G. However, its only grading criteria is based on the shape LIBERTY is in, so...I don't know how else to grade barber halves.

ANA describes VG-8 "Obverse: Entire head is weak, and most details in face are heavily worn. Some letters in LIBERTY are clear. Rim is complete. Reverse: Eagle shows only a small amount of detail. Arrows and leaves are flat. Most of shield is very weak. Parts of eye and motto are visible"

At least a VG-8 if not a 10, I can see clearly L TY and possibly more of the R. If it has four full and two half letters it'll be a 10.

look at the center coin in the multi-coin picture.

I was confused at first, and then the picture centered in my monitor.

    But, the letters are there.

yeah, sorry for that. I didn't know that picture i took would cause problems like it did. I'll have to remember to only take pictures of "one" coin at once.

I see some of the L and I now.

Thanks for the grading criteria, that's much better than what Red book has.

Very nice buy. Did you get a chance to look at all 100?

yes, although most were in AG-3 at most condition. I actually picked up another 04-S that is about a G-4, and a few others that were G-4+. 11 all in told.
