Looking at the STA in STATE. What would cause the letters to become so overweight? Looking at the S in particular, it also gets smaller at the top. Was trying to rule out the common DD, grease filled,abrasion. Anybody that has an explanation on this would be helpful.
That is a known weak area on the coins reverse. Many of the Cents have this on the reverse in the same area. Not a Mint error.

The rim is fine as it is not affected by the weak area. Even the top of the letters are almost back to normal.
