I've quite recently acquired this coin of Domitian. I believe it's an as, but it's a bit heavy weighted (that is, I found out that most are around the 11 grams, this one is 15.5). The coin is in spectacular condition: ROMAN IMPERIAL, Domitian. Denomination: AE As, minted: Rome, Italy; 80-81 AD Obv: CAES DIVI AVG VESP F DOMITIAN COS VII, Head of Domitian, laureate, right Rev: S C: Minerva advancing right, holding spear and shield Weight: 15.59g; Ø:30mm. Catalogue: RIC 294; C. 439; BMC 231; BN 238. Provenance: Found in Echt, the Netherlands, c. 2010; acq.: 10-2020 I would appreciate the opinion of our Flavian experts, e.g. @David Atherton, @Orfew
Really fine style on that example! This type could either be an As or a dupondius, but I would rather think it a dupondius with that weight. Hard to know for certain unless you can tell what the metal is. And it's neat to know the exact findspot too!
I agree with David regarding the style...wow. I also love the patina. The reverse is nice but that portrait is simply superb.
