I don't care for that much toning. It makes the coin look like it was colorized. It no longer looks like a Morgan Silver Dollar.

    1. That is not slight toning! That is full coverage on the obverse, and is quite attractive. This coin is certainly worth a premium over a white coin.

    2. $7500 is a pretty average price for this coin, if you look at more than just the last couple of sales. Over the past year, there have been two that sold for this value on Heritage - and 2 that sold for over $15000! So, I'd say that this coin sold for a fair price, especially given the toning.

Toning will always be objective and traded accordingly at a premium. The eye appeal on this one, and any for that matter, falls short with such drastic differences between obverse and reverse. My opinion. If the obverse matched the reverse, I would definitely bid on it. To a point. What must be remember is that toned coinage is a trend. Those around long enough may recall the blast white craze of the eighties where these were selling at similar premiums, percentage wise. That market has shifted and someday, toned will follow suit. So this should always be considered where a premium is warranted.

Everyone should consider the information posted by @Long Beard
You can lose a lot of money following trends. I remember, as he stated, the "blast white" trend. There are others. I think this will pass in time.

I will say, as long as I've been an active collector, there have been people saying toned coins were a trend and that they'd pass and don't spend your money.

It's been 20+ years now..... I'm not so sure this is a trend that will go away.

You may very well be right. But, I could never see pay $7500 for a $200 coin.

There’s a difference between paying a premium for a toned (aka ORIGINAL) 19th Century/early 20th Century coin and paying a large premium for a “monster toned” ASE because “It HaS tOnIng!” The former is the taste of an advanced collector. The latter is giving into a fad. The same goes with paying a premium for any coin with slight amounts of toning or neutral/negative eye appeal toning. Those are also fad buys.

    I'll agree that is ridiculous.

But, in the OP, the Ebay auction was $7500 for a $7500 coin.

No it's not and never was, at least not for the monster toners and true rainbow toners. Being crusty or original was what was getting dipped away left and right not big time toners

If a coin sells for $7500 it was never a $200 dollar coin

I don’t know where you get the $200 valuation

I see it as about $200 ignoring the toning. So, a person will pay $5000+ for the toning. If they like it they like it. I like my coins without.

Sorry but comments like this are just absolutely a waste of everyones time and just stupid when there's a long market history of ANY coin of that date and grade being mid 4 figures and someone starts trying to argue it's a $200 dollar coin. All you are doing is potentially misleading someone who doesn't know better with comments that aren't even in the same hemisphere of the actual value

It’s a $6000 coin ignoring the toning though

I can’t even get an 1880 S in MS-67+ for $200. Did you even look at the grade?

OK, I guess people will pay that much. I would not because it looks colorized to me. Didn't mean to insult anyone.
