Well it commemerates his Birth and he did help so many blind people to read amd I imagine India thought he was worthy of remembrence by putting his image on a coin

You are in lucky place Spock. Until 2004 I used to find all circulating commemorative coins in change but after '04 I have to source them out from other parts of the country. Maybe Calcutta mint which is nearest to my state is not producing enough coins. Last time I went to Calcutta in December, I even couldn't find a single new 50p coin.

Louis Braille was born in 1809, thus 200 years ago, and due to the widespread use of the the Braille system in the world, various countries will issue commems on this occasion. Obviously India :) but also Italy or the US for example.

Ever see America put an Indian on the coin? Not even Ghandi.

As chrisild said, Italy will issue a 2€ conmemorative coin for Louis Braille. There is no design published yet. I also wondered why Italy would issue a coin for him, as even France (he was French) has not been heard to do so. But I also remembered that not many countries have ever had coins with Braille signs on its coins, as Italy had.

Sometimes it's the idea or concept that counts, and then it does not matter that much any more whether the person behind the idea was French or American or Indian or ... For example, Portugal issued a collector coin to commemorate Baden-Powell. He was British but they honored him as the founder of the scouting movement.

In my opinion it is silly to say that "foreigners" should not be on coins. What I have problems with is countries that issue dozens of collector pieces featuring people from all over the world every year. But neither India nor the US is in that camp.

That Italian coin was even a circulation piece, but the "dots" are too small AFAIK to be read with your fingers. Compare them to the Braille texts on pill packages for example. :)

should be and why wouldn't they be are two different concepts. If i was Indian and compemtenpating my first commemorative issue, I wouldn't pick Braille. Panini maybe, but not Braille.

Thats a plain silly rumor. No such offer is issued by either I.G. Mints.
BTW Is the coin out in circulation?

Not on coins but on stamps.
I got two US stamps on Gandhi, one 4c and another 8c. Likewise India issued two stamps featuring Abe Lincoln. The last one is issued this december.
