Slab storage box size question

Gents,

I am doing a bit of "self slabbing" and noticed that the Coin World slabs as storage boxes are a bit different in size and thickness so regular coin slabs, PCGS, ANACS, etc. don't readily fit into these storage boxes.

I see one can order PCGS and NGC storage boxes online. Is either one better with regard to size compatibility with the greatest number of competitors slabs and "self slabs?"

What I am working with are the PCCB (which are very similar in size to the NCG), a bunch of items already ANACS certified, and a couple others.

I am getting the sense that the Coin World slabs are size compatible with some OLD PCGS slabs. I have no newer PCGS slabs to compare these with.

What are the size differences that I should be aware of? Regrets for my ignorance in this.

I been fighting the same battle. I dreamed somewhere that NGC boxes would hold other TPG's slabs. They do not. I will be keeping an eye on this thread.

 

Most slabs will fit in the PCGS boxes The lid just wont fully close if NGC ones are in there. The NGC ones you have to do the PCGS slabs diagonal or something like that. The NGC boxes are also expensive. The PCGS boxes are everywhere, if you ask around I'm sure you can find some cheap

 

This is a tricky situation. The Coin World slabs (I buy these by the case for my attribution service) fit PCGS boxes and NGC boxes and are stacking-compatible with PCGS slabs. New PCGS slabs fit 19 to a box in NGC boxes if loaded like this [/////////] rather than this [||||||||||||]. NGC slabs to not fit in PCGS boxes. ANACS slabs fit in both, but their shape and thickness make them not fit terribly well. Amos Advantage sells their Coin World Premier Box, which holds 25 PCGS, ANACS, or Coin World holders, but not NGC holders. I really don't know why Amos doesn't retool to make the lid on their box taller, as they're in control of the box specs. It would then accommodate NGC slabs in addition to the others, but then the boxes would stack funny.

I have a mixture of PCGS boxes and double-row slab boxes. I like to use sleeves on slabs in the double-row boxes, but the new PCGS slabs are too big for my sleeves. Fortunately, the lenses are recessed from the edges just a hair, so they won't rub against each other.

It fits them all with no issues, even the different ANACS style slabs.

 

This is the answer. Reminds me of the old 8-track tape boxes..... Where would a fellow find these?

Being the old fart that I am, I don't do much internet shopping, but I did just go to the Wizard Coin Supply store.... Is this the "Intercept" storage boxes that I have heard talked about here?

 

The one in the picture isn't it's just an after market box, but Wizard does have some of the intercept boxes as do the other venues previously mentioned

 

Is there a "name" or manufacturer associated with that one?

I was looking at the PCGS boxes and they seem cheap enough to give a few a try. I just noticed that the Coin World boxes, which hold the OLD PCGS slabs, will work with the newest ANACS slabs as well. You just need to put the divider tabs aligned with the groove on the side of the ANACS slabs. The ANACS slabs do NOT fit between the side tabs however.

I have the Wizard wooden row holders, blue felt inside. Both PCGS and NGC fit inside.

I also have some solo wood holders with glass covers.

 

The larger double intercept have no slots so can fit anything BUT the coins will all lean on each other - I dont have a problem with it but some may.
Fits around 50 coins give or take

 

The one pictured is called Aluminum Storage Display Coin Box Case Holds 10 PCGS NGC ANACS Slabs Holders NEW. It can be obtained from Wizard Coin as well as eBay.

 

Anybody use the single-wooden cases with glass covers from Wizard for their premium coins ? They are nice.

 

Buying some of these High Relief and Ultra High Relief moderns, they are in much "fatter" slabs than the normal PCGS and NGC plastics.

Aren't they treated ? I mean, it's not like it's lumber. Did you see an article or expert that said this was a problem some while back, Doug ?

 

But slabbed coins wouldn't go into cardboard holders !

If wood is bad, you can make a case for not putting slabbed coins on wooden shelves, near or on bookshelves, etc.

Just sayin'....

 

Intercept Shield boxes from Wizard Coin Supply are the best. They fit any slabs and are really made for long term storage.

 

Errr, guys, the slabs from NGC, PCGS, etc, are SEALED, by design. Any residual gasses from wood or cardboard storage containers will not penetrate unless the seal is defective. In fact, you should be able to store such slabs in distilled water—or Diet Coke, if you prefer—with no damage.
