Sorry I missed this when you first posted it. Excellent history and very much enjoyed reading it and gawking at the pictures. If I was in your position, I'd consider these items as priceless family heirlooms to be shared with future generations.

Thanks for the post. Photos are great, as is the history. I don't know how I missed this post back in September, so glad it was highlighted today.

I love the story and the history. What a great thing to have your grandfather's collection and having the same interests as he did. I think it's incredible how some collections survive over the years due to various circumstances. Thank you for sharing.

That is an amazing bit of history and sounds like not only would he be proud of your numismatic interests, but also your gift of sharing with others. I'm sure he would be beaming with pride.

It's a great picture, but I guarantee you people would confuse it with a certain corporate logo... ;)

Actually, people said he looked like Colonel Sanders and would call him that from time to time. So glad you said that! Hahaha

I'll bet he got tired of that. LOL

But they do favor one another, and I suppose they were roughly contemporary to each other.

    Update:
I added this to the collection today. I've known who had these for about 15 years and finally was able to buy them today. An uncut pair of serial #1 notes with my great grandfathers signature on them. I have the A block of this sheet- see the original post.

Boy, howdy, wouldn't it? Especially if they had been those newfangled quarters from later in the year, with the underdressed Lady Liberty on 'em! ;)

Of course setting aside a $10 roll of quarters in 1916 would have been a much bigger investment than it is now.

Too bad he didn’t save a couple 16 quarters at least. Great story

As many of you have expressed, I, too, am in awe of the story. I am sure that the staff of the ANA's magazine would love to have this story. I am proud of my family's heritage too. My great grandmother gave my grandmother a $2 bill from many years ago. I was 18 when she gave it to me. It wasn't in mint shape when I got it, but now, it is wrinkled and torn. As many of you might feel, as, I believe it was Mark Twain (correct me, if I am wrong), who said, "Youth is wasted on the young." I am lucky to still have the $2 bill, but am ashamed of the care I took in preserving it.
Thank you, all, for sharing your thoughts.
