Wrapping up my GTG marathon with a rather common date Buffalo Nickel from my type set: I love the color on this one; it has some of the original "silver"-ish color as well as some blood orange/red tint, which at the correct angle almost seems violet. I'll post reveal in ~24 hours. (Not to be confused with my previous 1938-D Buffalo Nickel GTG)
Interesting, is die rust what that caused the pitting on the face, neck and other areas of the bust on the obverse? Not sure how that would affect the grade. MS 65.
The strike is a bit week. And with the 38 buffalo being one of the most preserved nickels in the series they grade these pretty hard. I am at a 66 but also wouldn't be surprised if it is in a 65+holder. At any rate it is a very nice looking Buffalo.
I love the coin. What is the cause of the rough look to the neck on the obverse and other areas? Die damage?
Die fatigue, which makes it tricky to grade. Very attractive, great luster and eye appeal, surfaces are good with hits on the brow and planchet marks that haven't been struck out, but has some striking issues that I don't think are related to die fatigue. Torn between 66 and 67, and I guess it comes down to whether or not the color makes up for the strike. I think I would be a pass at 67, so I'll say it's a 66, even though luster and eye appeal are 67-worthy.
