Depends on who's grading you want to go with. The amount of detail left on the Morgan almost exactly matches that of the 'Good' condition pictures in the ANA 6th edition. But in order to get a 'Good', it requires the coin to have full rims. I don't know if you could call the left side of the obverse a full rim. Maybe. I say if you were lucky, a grading company might give it a VG. IMHO, its no better than a "Good". On the quarter, I'd probably have to say the same. The reverse brings it up, the obverse details bring it down. Either G or VG. VG definitely possible. I would love to own either of them. Thanks for sharing.
I have to agree with Mark H. G-6 for the Morgan and F-14 with details for the Bust. To bad about them scratches, I still l like it though.. The Bustie is easy to attribute. B-1 R-1. Thats the only die set that year. : ) If you would like to test my attribution on it you can count the reeds on the edge, should be 112 and have 168 dentils on the obverse.
VG details, damaged (rim bump) for the Morgan dollar. F details, damaged (scratched) for the bust quarter.
Yes - to me those are typical weak strike areas. In this case to me it looks like weak strike with wear to F details. Keep in mind I am not an expert but this is just my opinion on what I see. I also do not have a problem with you calling in VG. I would probably call it very good if the rims were more worn and flat. Quote from Last page of my ANA grading book - Coins of this design are sometimes weakly struck, particularly around the curl on the neck, in the clasp, the hair on the motto above the neck.
I'm not an expert either and you probably know more than me on them as I have rarely looked at this series. You also have the majority on your side. I was just wondering what your thought process was. Be it VG or F, fortunately the price difference between the two would appear to be very minimal (<$20) in this case anyway.
G6 on the Morgan. I don't know about the Bust, I'd have to go find my copy of Photograde for that series, lol.
