I am new to this board, so welcome everyone. My concern is that I have seen few 2008 pennies & no 2008 nickels. Just wanting to see if this is the same with you.
I had asked about these a while back thinking they might be mint-set-only issues but they are showing up now (about a year late).
I am not sure if I am misunderstanding you, but I have a 2008-P nickel in my pocket change right now.
I haven't really paid too much attention to it, but now that I think about it. I haven't seen a 2008 nickel at all this year.
I have seen one 2008 cent and no nickels. I wonder why they are so slow to get into circulation? Do you think the slow economy has slowed down the circulation of these coins-people just aren't spending money (if they have any to spend)?
Or mabye people named FreakyGarrettC are hoarding them because they are the last year of issue for the memorial. :secret:
Got 2 2008 nickels out of a whole box (Didn't a mint truck crash with a whole bunch of 08 nickels on it?) and countless cents from 2 boxes. If there are a bunch of BU cents in a take-a-penny leave-a-penny ask the person behind the register for a shiny roll. I got 2 rolls that way. Good luck
Yes, a truck did crash on I-95 near the Kennedy Space Center. If I remember correctly it was last summer. There were nickels all over the highway. It took them several hours to clean up!!
The only way I saw a regular business strike 2008 cent was in a 2x2 coin holder at the local coin dealer. I've yet to get any through a regular transaction. I have been getting more 1960's 1970's cents lately I've noticed. Some in nice original AU condition. Probably people turning in spare change due to economy in my area.
here in Syracuse - 2008's cents are very common in what you get in change. that is the same from friends and family members that give me their change. i think more than half of the pennies are new 2008's pennies. now finding new 2008 nickels is a different story - i think ive seen maybe 3 this year. wasn't the accident on I-95 in south florida carrying all new nickels - but the story says its about 3 million which is a very small percentage of all the ones made http://www.tcpalm.com/news/2008/sep/17/nickels-roadways-close-southbound-lane-i-95/ Snowman
Is it illegal to metal detect there now? I'm sure the are not all accounted for. It wouldn't be worth the $ per hour to find them all after the majority was picked up.
Looking at the Mint's stats, the 2008 circulation mintages have been lower for most 2008 coins. I have found 2008 cents and nickels, but have yet to find a dime from either mint.
I seriously doubt that the Fla. Highway Patrol would appreciate someone walking around with a metal detector on a busy expressway. LOL!! They seem to have a lot of serious accidents on I-95. That is a very busy area.
2008 coins I have never seen a year so tough to get as 2008 coins. It was near June before I got a box of 2008-P Lincolns and I have still not been able to secure any 2008-D's at all - never seen it like this, never. I think we may owe all this to CoinStar though as people pour stuff into those machines like crazy and the feds now have no reason to order new coin. Ben Peters
