The newly appointed Publisher of Numismatic News is asking a question - " I would like to hear from you: what you like about what we're doing, what we could be doing differently, what new things we could do, etc. No promises on implementing these ideas, but we need to hear them. " Anyone care to answer ?
GDJMSP I subscribe to NN and love it. I have no complaints, though i have only been getting it for three months. Regards, Stan
yes. i think they should have a free online section some of us who live internationally cant pay huge amounts to access the resource. also improve the world coin sections with pictures stats etc i find the coverage on indian coins to be very disturbing or the lack of coverage.
Yes - they need to be very concerned with people how live west of the hudson river...poor souls. Ruben
here's something that I think they do exceptionally: I LOVE LOVE LOVE the mint statistics! Mintages for the current US Mint products is bordering on invaluable!!! Maybe they could expand it in some way? Maybe incorporate the upcoming products or go a bit deeper into the mintages. IOW, they are conmstantly deleting data from the page due to lack of room. Maybe expand it in order to accomodate more data? Oh, yeah... and one thing I think that they do poorly. Coin Market's mintage figures haven't been updated since 2004. 5 years???? They publish this data, so I doubt it's a matter of not having it.
My suggestion is to donate some copies to coin shows all over the US. Maybe Canada too. I go to about 2 to 4 coin shows a month. One is usually from 70 to 100 dealers. Others are rather on the smaller size. The larger one has a table in front near the front door with miscellaneous memos, newsleters and magazines. Numismatic News is one of them. Naturally there is a security guard by the door so most people just take one. Probably not necessary since we coin collectors are so honest. :smile I've never seen a copy of any coin magazines at the smaller shows though. Possibly if they would place a note in their paper that if they were to be contacted by coin shows in areas where such papers are not real common, they could send some copies to them on occations. As an example note how many already have noted they never see that paper. An occational note in places like this forum from them to coin show personal or individuals from coin shows as to the possible sending of sample issues free to the coin shows might be an insentive to increase circulation.
Not to be a pest but here are a few more things they could do: Advertise their newspaper in the Red Book. Sure are a lot of adds in there now. Have a web site similar to coin world where coin shows are listed. Send a free copy to all those CT members that claim they've never seen that paper. If they agree I'll pretend to never have seen one. Ask CT members to submit articles to them. Ask CT members if there is any interest in coins in thier schools. If so send some complimentary issues for the students. Nothing like making a future subscriber. Pay me for all my great suggestions. :thumb::thumb:
Stricter enforcement on advertisers. " Undercover" buys are in order, and enforce the grading rules. Newbies are being taken for a ride. Ken Pines ( Coast to Coast ) is a huge multi page advertiser who was booted from the ANA for deceptive practices, yet is there every week preying on the uneducated. He is only one of many shysters in both CW and NN. Look at the buy ads: Week after week see the big boys ads buying XF/AU this and XF/AU that, a month later, they run those same coins as Choice and Select BU......... Rant officially over. I subscribe to both.
I gather they want to know in order to increase their readership. Linns' Stamp news has a consumer column called E. Rawolik ( kiloware spelled backwards) where an anonymous writer buys an advertised deal and analyzes the truth and value of such. Would like to see something similar with some of their advertisements. Also, as most of their selling value disappears a couple of issue past, they might put the .pdf of entire issues over 3 or 4 issues past for non-subscribers to be able to access and read....they might subscribe. I also have noticed that their "price guide" seems much different from "coin value's". A favorable real market pricing comparisons would help validate it. Many buy NN or CW for the pricing guides. Hope it'll get a message from the the guys in the trenches to the guys in the "Ivory Tower". Thanks GD.....
