In fairness, the joke works better if told verbally. It’s too easy to miss the nuance of the word change in writing.

New coin talk rule. Don't try to get anyone around here to crack a smile. Someone might get a cramp.

I think you misunderstood, I like the joke, I laughed, but I think it’s easier to get if told verbally. I wasn’t tying to be critical.

Honestly, if it hadn't been for Paul's "nuance" reference, I probably would never have gotten the written story since there is nothing grammatically wrong with either sentence.

With all dew respect, the grammar police were right.

Well circulated nickels are worn...whether or not they are War nickels. Story might work better if the nickels were uncirculated...

My first impression is that they were trying to sell the non-silver war nickel for silver prices

    War nickels do have silver...35%

Too be clear here for those that didn't get it...
20% below melt value is a very reasonable investment price for any coin. In the story the man concluded that the seller was trying to sell him 300 WORN nickels. The man was not familiar with the term "war nickel" and became irate.

Not the 1944 Henning, which is what I was thinking about (but forgot the name)

You overthought it. Your coin knowledge was too advanced for that low brow joke.

The Henning counterfeits aren't war nickels. IIRC correctly, only one date was a war year date, and all of them were produced in the 1950’s.
