Ok, these are my first 3 roman style coins I got today, one was bigger than the others, 2 were the size of a dime and one alittle bigger. What do you all think? Should I weigh them and post up measurements? Do they look real? I am def going to do more homework, which I should of did first but I wanted to get in on the sale. Also I just realuzed I posted the back of one coin twice.
The third, crude looking one might be a barbaric imitation, though I’m not too familiar with imitations of females
The top one is a denarius of Julia Domna, the second is a denarius of her niece, Julia Soaemias, and the bottom one is an imitative/unofficial issue copying a DIVA FAVSTINA posthumous issue of Faustina II. I have no reason to think any are fake. Here are my examples of your coins:
Yes, it's very interesting, indeed. It's mimicking something like this: This official issue above shows her hairstyle from the 170s AD until her death in 175. The hairstyle on the imitative issue, though, is one she wore in the late 150s, such as this one:
Actually, I think the second one is of Julia Soaemias, mother of Elagabalus. The name ends with an S, before the AVG on the obverse, so it should be IVLIA SOAEMIAS AVG. It should be RIC 243 (Elagabalus) - http://numismatics.org/ocre/id/ric.4.el.243 I don't have an example of RIC 243, but of RIC 241, which has Venus standing - ATB, Aidan.
..i've bid on barbarous imitations of Faustina and lost....i just received this Julia Domna Denarius from a most thoughtful & generous friend(@Ryro) who gifted it to me here in CT just recently..that's how peeps in CT ancients roll
Very interesting, i am learing a lot on these first 3 coins. Would you all say these are average or well known easy to get coins, I guess I am courious if I got a good deal, I paid $67 for the 2 smaller ones and $56 for the bigger one. Including shipping on both which was like $10 each package. The sale said it was seller lot pick of either Danaris or Antoninianus, is one more collectable?
Thats a cool coin..I seen where someone here called it the fat bottom lady coin and put sir mix alot and queen video on the post. The detail in the coin is nice.
that's probably about average on cost...there's many different variables on coins and indeed, even variables on the collectors themselves when selecting and purchasing coins...you'll get the hang of it now you've got your feet wet and posted your 1st thread...
Here I was thinking there was only a few type of coins to collect and I was going to get one of each...holy cow was I overwhelmed at what there is out there. I did see on this site a structured by date/time period of the different types of coins. Very informative. Glad I ran accross it. I got a long way to go in collecting acient coins.
Wow you guys are blowing me away. I have no clue when it comes to ancients ." I must learn", he said .
@Everett Guy, Welcome to our motley crew (from here, that's more WS than '80's rock --trust me; I was there for exactly one of 'em)! The truth is, I saw your post earlier today, and was just Hoping someone from the myriad people here who actually know what they're talking about would confirm that yours look real. If it was me, I'd be letting myself exhale. For anything in the way of references, the first thing you need is the Wildwinds website. https://www.wildwinds.com/coins/i.html More especially, from along the top of the home page, "Roman: (.....) Imperial coinage by ruler." That will give you a drop-down menu that lists everyone who had coins issued in their own name, whether emperors, empresses, or their children, some of whom didn't live long enough to do much of anything. Everyone else here nailed it; these are all from Julias, starting with Julia Maesa, all of whom were of the Severan dynasty, c. early 3rd century AD. And the reverse of that smallest, third one does look 'barbarous,' meaning that it was imitated, likely as not within the borders of the empire, instead of by real barbarians. (...But it's Still Really Cool!) Once you click on any one entry, it will give you more in the way of dates, along with detail about the legends. No one listing is likely to tell you all there is to know, but they run very heavily to being reliable. ...Right, and as far as what you paid, it was easily in the range of a typical, fair retail. ...Unless you do in fact have something scarce, like some people (who are already way over my head) are hinting at.
