    VF35 is way too low.

I would say XF45, but only because I'd hope to see more luster for AU50. Really, I see nothing holding this coin back from AU otherwise, in terms of details. It has nice steel-grey toning. May have had an old cleaning generations ago, but I would call it "market acceptable" on that front.

Sure, there are a few faint hairlines and marks here and there, but they appear consistent with the grade and I would not call them problems. Of minor concern is a flattening of the rim by Liberty's toe. Is that a light rim bump/bruise? Has the reeding on the edge been affected there?

Overall, it is a very handsome coin, in my opinion.

Numismedia trends put the (retail) value at $168 in XF40 and $240 in AU50.

Extrapolating from that, and assuming XF45 (and no severe rim bumps), one gets a $175-ish value, but I'd shave the estimate down a bit, to $150-ish at retail, just to be conservative. (Actually, in the real world, that might still be a tad high.)

I'm thinking about picking up a few Seated coins to fill holes in my Dansco type album. Since that means buying raw, this post is timely for me: I need to improve my grading of seated coins. I'm familiar with that eagle reverse from capped bust series, but the obverse is where I need to focus.

So, since I'm watching the thread, I figure it's incumbent on me to at least weigh in. I'll go XF40 overall. (I think the reverse is a strong 45, but although the obverse appears well struck, the wear and the hits on the right arm/field take it down a peg). Overall it's a good honest coin and I like it. Looking forward to all the responses.

Yes there is a slight bump on the rim. Extends down about 1/5 of the width of the coin into the reeding.
I appreciate the thoughtful feedback. Picked it up because I loved the look of it. Looks great in the album too

Yes. A great album coin indeed. Because of the rim bump, you'd need to deduct a bit from the expected value if you were going to sell it, of course, but that matters little if you're keeping it and displaying it in the album, where that issue is not likely to be visible at all.

Nice looking coin. I would call it a XF-45. Sheet for the coin in 45 is $150 retail is $190

Based on wear alone, it's a solid AU-50 coin. The possible blemish at 5 o'clock on the obverse and the overall darkness may or may not impact the value in your eyes.
The 1858-P and O mint coins are the most common dates in the entire 52 year Seated Liberty half series.

Given the minor rim issues, I would grade it EF-40. Of course the EF-40 grade has been "de-graded" in recent years. It seems like VF-30s and certainly 35s are now EF-40s.

The Grey Sheet says an EF-40 is worth $125; and EF-45 is worth $145.

I like the look of this coin. I don't save all my coins because of the condition because many of the coins I like are terribly expensive, that's the reason I buy lower conditioned coins. I have one coin that came back from NGC that only said "Genuine". Much of collection are "raw" coins that I like. Knowing its real value is interesting buy not important to me.

She's a beauty. With the exception of wear I will go AU. Good luck

XF-45 but that dark color is going to hold the price back a little. Nice looking otherwise. Welcome to CT.

Based upon wear alone, this Seated Liberty half obverse is in the XF 45, AU 50 range IMO. The numerous light dings on the rim and chatter on Liberty’s left arm and in the field are a slight drag on the obverse grade. The reverse appears to be a solid AU 50. Overall the coin deserves a XF 40 to 45 grade, but if it were a part of my collection, I’d assign a XF 40 value. Nice coin.

I am in with the rest of them. I am a seated half lover and would be quite pleased if this one were in my collection. And I would pay AU money for it.

True, it's not for everyone, but I for one like that dark color. Quite a bit. More if it was a CircCam, with some contrast, but that steel-grey is nice in my eyes.

Here's one I had that was nice and dark but had a little bit of CircCam contrast. Not as high grade as the one in the OP here, but a very handsome coin, to my way of thinking. I like 'em like this.

There is dark color and there is black. I don't mind the dark color. It's black that really turns me off. The is the terminal shade of tarish, or it could indicate going through a fire.

Yes! Love the dark look, it was what immediately attracted me to this coin. First time seeing “CircCam” but thats exactly the appearance i love having, especially in my albums.
