You have posted some fantastic coins on here, now I feel a bit less insecure I was looking for a 1700s 8 real at an affordable price for the longest time. Finally found one discounted because of yellow residue that came right off. Ill have to post it, pleasent VF details
I cant wait to see it! And don't worry about whether your coins are "fit" to share. We love seeing coins and the reasons people like them.
Thanks for being so welcoming. There is a challenge with having ecclectic taste on a budget, but there is some fun in that hunt (doesnt always get you the best reputation with local "high end" dealers) Quality 8 real pieces for $50 & under, my favorite one. I shouldve done a before & after, without the yellow crud he would've been 50% more expensive.
These were and continue to be faked. Some basic steps to help authenticate them would include an accurate weight and a careful look at the edge design.
Absolutely! And if I may caution you against cleaning coins without expert knowledge on the subject. Do you mind sharing your method? Also, these are not my area of expertise, but @jgenn gave sage advice. I've made a lot of bad purchases over the years and knowing how to detect counterfeits in the 8R field is crucial. What else do you collect?
I used a CoinCare solution that a youtube dealer (thecoingeek, great channel) used on some large cents. He used it to clean off minor corrision, sent it in to PCGS, and it straight graded! Q tip with small amount of solution to get rid of residue or dirt. I love toners and natrual patina, I am careful to leave alone problem-free pieces before I create a larger problem. Usually use it to even out an old cleaning or some crud that is kiling eye appeal These have the proper reeding, I should take a photo just to be sure. World Crowns have been my obession of late. Problem grade 1800s US coins, Ancients, old large coppers, anything old & cool with a story.
