Whats your favorite coin to collect and why? What is your numismatic goal? As a collector I dont have any one coin that I have speacialized in yet but am leaning toward Indian Head Pennies. Most coins I collect beacause of eye appeal which I suspect is common with most. My goal would be to complete a set. A set of what, I dunno maybe responses to this post will help me. Anyways I thought this might be an interesting thread as I am enjoying being part of the CT community.
I am starting to break away from the current US mint stuff and lean more towards colonials. I am also starting to learn they both hurt your wallet.
I have some completed sets, some not completed. I really like commemoratives and there are some type sets I would like to do. So many coins, such a thin wallet.
Needless to say, I like all large cents, but as the case for alot of coins I want, my rich uncle has not got out of the poor house yet.
I am a fan of Jefferson nickels. I like it, because you can spend next-to-no money putting together a circulated set, or you can spend thousands of dollars per coin trying to to put together an ultra-high-grade set. You can put together the largest part of a circulated set from 1938-present out of pocket change, with the exception of only a few coins. More advanced collectors can try to assemble an uncirculated set. People with deep pockets can go after nicely toned examples, or fully struck pieces. There is something in this series for everybody. On top of everything else, I think the coins are very beautifully designed.
I like some of the gold commemoratives from the 80s such as the 87 constitution and 88 olympic because the designs are underrated in my opinion. I like the ASE because it is a large and beautifully designed coin. Among the older coins I like morgan dollars because of their history and the civil war and hard times tokens because of their uniqueness.
I love all the pre '50s issues , that's why I'm working on a Type set and early Commemerative sets , If I had to pick a favorite it would be SLQ , with the Mercury dime and WLH close behind , I guess I love any coins that Teddy Roosevelt helped usher in . rzage
I like the Jefferson nickel because it offers you the best of both worlds. The ease of finding every date and mint mark in bu condition at a price point that won't break the bank and it also offers years of upgrading to the best specimen you can find. There is also the ease of finding bu rolls at a decent price. And if that isn't enough, I believe the high grade coins have yet to be realized by the general coin collecting public making them available at reasonable prices. Example: A 1958D MS66FS has a value of $100.00 and there are only 126 coins graded this grade or higher. Not too bad for having minted 168,249,120 coins. So, for a $100.00 investment how would you like to be one of 126 people to own a top grade coin? Investment potential-excellent. Now, let me see; what would I do if I had 100 Ikes sitting in a draw? Hummm
That easy Lincolns 90% of them are $.01. plus with gloves and a little care they can be worth a lot more one day
I like the Roman provincial coinage of Alexandria. First off, its the longest series of provincial issues, with more emperors present than any others. Second, the designs on the coinage are exceptional: in the 2nd century under Antoninus Pius, there was an issue of twelve types of large bronze drachms (silver-dollar sized), each showing one of the houses of the Zodiac, as well as a type showing all of them at once. If that's not enough, there are also coins depicting the lighthouse of Alexandria (one of the 7 wonders) and all of the labors of Hercules. And to top it all off, there's the issue of style and preservation. As each die was individually engraved, there's a lot of variation in style (some engravers were more skilled than others). Its difficult to find some of the types in decent grade, as the bronze coins were never hoarded. To find a coin that combines rarity, style, and preservation is incredibly challenging, especially in my budget!
Usually when I complete a series, I have to find a new "favorite" to collect. I am about to start Barber halves. I don't know what attracts me to this coin, but I really can't wait to get started!!!
Good Move! Love that series. Just don't bother to try to do it in VF, or you will take a l-o-n-g time to complete. (Even for the more common dates).
I have a hard time choosing just one favorite coin type. Thats probably why I have so many sets on the go at the same time..lol. I guess if I had to pick it would be either Standing Liberty Quarters or Half Dimes. The SLQs because they have the most attractive design IMO and the Half Dimes because they're a challenge to assemble an entire set.
