tell that to Bjarni Herjólfsson and Leif Ericson who visited the continent of North America about 500 years before. Certainly the fact that a continent existed might have filtered its way to these other Europeans who seemed to think things did not exist until they found them. But again, all coins are propaganda, this is the only point I was making. Whether you agree with the message or not is not an issue I care to discuss. If we were to debate every message on every coin either real or implied it would just be a bunch of bickering.
Hmm, were they on their way to India? I don't think so. But sure, coins are a means of representation, a way to show how a government views itself or its country. As for the Vasco da Gama commem, since his voyages established a trade route that for a while was practically a Portuguese monopoly, it does make some sense to state that commercially he "discovered" India ... And then the empire stoleded it. Correct me if I'm wrong but the Portuguese not still have extensive trade routes / trading posts around the south and east coasts of India in the early 20th century?
I don't know until when the Portuguese ruled in Goa but the last year Portuguese India coins minted was 1961. Thats almost 14 years from 1947, India's independence from British rule.
you know what the problem is...well ther are two problems. First NOBODY CARES Secondly PORTUGAL DIDN'T DISCOVER INDIA 400 YEAR AGO. The were trying to get there all along! Does anyone know any basic world history around here? Ruben:hammer:
Yep: "After India gained independence from the British in 1947, Portugal refused to negotiate with India on the transfer of sovereignity of their Indian enclaves. On 12 December 1961, the Indian army commenced with Operation Vijay resulting in the annexation of Goa, Damman and Diu into the Indian union." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goa#History So 1961 being the last year for those coins is not merely accidental ...
