Really can't grade proofs from photos with much accuracy as hairlines may only show at certain angles. That being said, I'll guess PR65, CAC. Beautiful coin!
A good point and one I thought about before I posted this. Without having any personal knowledge of the inner workings at CAC, it seems more than reasonable that those folks must grade each submission even if only to reject those that are C for the slab grade and those that are over-graded. They must also grade the coin in order to determine if it deserves a gold bean (undergraded for the slab grade). It seems to me that CAC must grade the coin without regard to the slab grade in order to accomplish what they claim to do. I doubt that anyone here would claim that CAC just accepts the slab grade at face value without any critical thought applied to it. That said, by posting this coin in this manner, I have put you more in the shoes of the CAC assessors than would otherwise be the case. And, even if I'm all wet (always a distinct possibility), you get a slightly different challenge to pique your interest and talents.
OK, here's the reveal. Thanks everyone for playing. There were 17 responses: XF - 1 PR-64 - 4 PR-65 - 9 PR65+ - 1 PR-66 - 1 PR-68 - 1 CAC Green - 13 CAC Gold - 2 No Reply - 2 I think you guys magnificently displayed your genius and knowledge on this one. The coin is PCGS PR-65 with a Green CAC sticker. Here are in order: The sellers slab photos. The TruView photo that I originally posted. Obverse and Reverse crops from the sellers original slab photos. I will be interested to see what the coin really looks like in hand. I bid on this coin thinking that it probably looked somewhere between the TruView and seller photos. Should have it Thursday.
Curious to see how much color/toning you'll be able to see in-hand with "normal" light vs. the professional spotlights TrueView folks use. Regardless, absolutely beautiful coin!
Update: I just received this coin (3 days from CA to FL via USPS). The TruView photo is a very fair representation of the coin. Frankly, I was surprised but very pleased.
Final report on this. After very close examination I cannot find any hairlines at all on this coin. At PF-65 on this vintage, you might expect to see something but there is nothing. Makes me wonder why it didn't get a 66 or a Gold bean at 65.
Classic proofs are graded much differently than business strikes. The flaws are much more penalized in 63 and above. And John Albanese at CAC is even harder on them. A green bean on a gem 65 or higher essentially means 66 money.
