Cointalk is full of very knowledgeable people. Numismatics definately thrives here. I have learned so much in the few months I've been here. There are many great people here with resident experts on all types of coins. Cointalk is the best Numismatic website, period.
Well, I went from an extremely narrow focus, to a really too wide focus and am now going to be working on narrowing my focus again. 6mo ago I knew nothing. Now I know more, but still nothing. However, now I realize there is way more to learn than I ever imagined... And there are people to help me! Also, I used to have dreams of weird/beautiful paper money. Just recently, I have found out that some of those bills are actually obsolete currency. Must have seen them somewhere before, but not sure where. Could be I have some paper money colletor in my bloodines. Thanks to you all!
I know I just signed up the other day and all but I love to see what others in this field that know alot more then me think and so far everyone has been really helpful. I have alot to learn and I guess what I like best about this site or what it has done is open my eyes to counter fitters and other people trying to get the better of you.
I have to say CT has opened my eyes to toned coins. I never cared for them before but now I will always be on the look out for one that catches my eye. It has also made me more picky as to what I want and am willing to purchase.
CT is GREAT! All: I am so glad that I found CT! It has been invaluable to me. Like many people coming iunto numistatics, I got my start with the 50 state quarter program. CT is really giving me an education that is proving to be invalaulable. I do not respond to most threads because i believe that i am far to inexperiences to offer useful advice. As to the people here on CT, They are the BEST!! I sometimes wixh that some of the more heated discussions would be moved to a different thread or taken to PMs! I am looking to start collecting recent moderns, ike, SBA and SAC dollars and slowly get into the mercury and roselvelt dimes.
Mostly, I just lurk. But I have learned so much pertaining to grading, at vs nt, and the TPGs. Thanks for all the info!
I love this site! Plus it's been excellent at dusting off decades old knowledge that I had lurking in the deep and dark corners of what passes for my Brain. I suppose it's like riding a bicycle then. There's a tremendous amount of knowledge on this board and I am grateful for it. Even if I am a hard-headed jerk
CT is a nice place to rlx.. good pple and maybe i will meet some of u guys..:eat:. Best part is, most of the pple here are from different geographies Btw, started looking out for the mint marks in the common coins in circulation. So i can now examine a coin travelling in a bus or train. its fun and good way to unwind..
Same here! I never really knew toned coins existed until Lehigh96 opened my eyes with some of his beautiful coins (and pictures!!). Now I LOVE them! Even if I don't have any....I still think they're awesome and hope to have a nice collection of toned coins someday hya:
I've learned a lot about grading, how to detect cleaning, TPGs, how to avoid getting ripped off, etc... but the most important has been to observe how intelligent collectors think about various collecting issues. You can't get that from a book.
When you post that you now understand that leaving the gold standard was good for the US economy then I'll know we made progress. **poke poke**
It seems less so every day. Practically every problem in the economy today stems from the fact that we do not have a permanent money supply. Instead, nothing gets done without credit and we are learning that there are limits to the amount of credit the economy can support, and the problems created when credit is withdrawn. There are sound alternatives to the gold standard, but a fiat debt-based currency doesn't happen to be one of them. So there is no progress to report.
Right - if we were on a gold standard not only would have we suffered from whiplash over the last year but in addition we would have been able to bail out the banks and we'd be head long into a depression. Really it boggles my mind how your so stuck on this, being the bright individual you are. Ruben
I have learned a lot from GD and Mike D. and many other members. I see posts of beautiful coins and get lustful occasionally. I got a Budgood bag a while ago, that was fantastic. Mostly, I have expanded my interest in and knowledge about different type coins.
CT has made me much, much pickier as a coin consumer it has also sharpened my grading skills. Through the members of CT I have discovered the Bust issues and have a nice little Bust Collection (thanks, esp to Bonedigger). And as my knowledge increases, and I pass on what little nuggets I have, I find my collection is getting nicer.
