I like Cloudsweeper99's response and maybe it's not far from the truth. Are they incentivised to BB more than less? Anyways, re: this coin, playing devils advocate, I wonder if this coin was dipped too much and retoned with not enough luster left. I have some Lincolns like this with minimal nicks (64 or better) that look similar with minimal cartwheel luster which is a telltale sign of overdipping, to my understanding. As I understand all MS coins should have some cartwheel luster (that's part of the definition of MS). The ANA definition of AU-55 is "Evidence of friction on high points of design. Most of the mint luster remains." A coin at this level, 63 or 64, should have a lot of luster. They don't use the word cartwheel, but muted luster is considered a sign of cleaning. I think the problem is so many lincolns have been overdipped and retoned, they'd have little to grade if they strictly followed these definitions, which is what market acceptability is about. Maybe I am wrong, but these are my thougts. Any possiblity MS 70 was used on the coin? It has that look. I say let it tone down with a Taco Bell napkin and retry later. Just MHO's
dprice7 Unless I am missing something, you are saying that the coin was BB'ed for "Questionable Color" (or at least that is what they said on the coins I suspect were cleaned/dipped), but that is not what they said. And if this coins appears to lack luster, it is my pics. There is plenty of luster and cart wheels.
Altered surface. Looks like your coin was singled out. Maybe the grader was having a bad day. http://www.coinmine.com/On Grading Coins/On Grading Coins.htm there are a fair number of altered surface coins that were not 'body-bagged' (returned by a TPG for altered surfaces) but instead made it into a slab and received a grade.
RLM: does PCGS specify altered services verses questionable color? What is the difference? Cleaning verses recoloring? am just guessing what could be wrong. Who knows what they are thinking? If the coin has luster it should grade (which is hard to photo in my experience). I would wait and retry later. I have heard PCGS is hard on any coins with blue tints in them being suspect for MS 70. There are some good posts on Collectors Society on this subject.
The only thing I see is a "potential" spot right behind Lincoln's eye on his head. It is likely toning, but the pics make it look like kind of like a spot of PVC or verdigris. I dont think that would be covered by "altered surfaces" though, so I'm at a loss. Nice coin by the way!! John
I agree with the questionable toning call. The coin has the look of a copper coin that was lightly cleaned or dipped and retoned in my opinion.
"altered surfaces is code for "it doesn't look right, but we are unwilling/unable to state exactly why, but we will not certify it". It can be dipped, over-dipped, baked, thumbed, etc. and get the altered surfaces bb. Looking at your images the color looks "off" to me and so they used the catch-all altered surfaces since they didn't want to be any more specific. You could try sending it back, but you would very likely get the same result.
Does ICG do cleaned coins now? I'm not up to date about that. ANACS definitely does. IF you are going to send the coin out again, I'd go with a TPG that will cert cleaned coins, otherwise you may be wasting more money to get another BB.
I looked at the pics before reading the thread, took about 3 seconds and the first thought that came to mind was altered surfaces. The pics that indicate it the best are the 3rd obv pic and the last rev pic. Rather than just explain it, I'm going to ask you to explain it to me. Using those two pics what would the indicators be ?
I agree - not sure if this is what Doug is referring to, but I think so. The discoloring above one cent and it looks like behind lincolns head. Looks like something (PVC maybe??) was on the coin and then removed. Not sure, but wanted to give it a shot.
Precisely, but I think the entire reverse has been worked on. Look at how bumpy the surface of the coin is (using that last pic). Part of the O in ONE is virtually gone. There are small holes all over the surface of the reverse as if corrosion were removed. I really think it is obvious.
RLM, I bought a similar coin off eBay but have since learned more about cleaned coins. My coin is still nice coin re: strike and wear. I would start a new post (sorry to piggyback on yours) but I am blocked right now for some reason. I'll post as my coin seems to have been treated the same way. If it makes you feel better, I paid AU money for around $220 or so (don't want to get up to look up the exact amount now). You live and learn, hopefully we learn.
Sorry, having problems posting photos on this site as well?? Minimal luster with Halo effect with remaining luster (not cartwheel)
Something is wrong with this thread. Gettng funky garbage all over. But you coin looks wiped to me Warning: parse_url [function.parse-url]: Unable to parse url in [path]/includes/init.php(294) : eval()'d code on line 21
