Guess the grade of this Jefferson War Nickel graded by NGC. Please don't cheat! Comments about the coin always welcome, and no I don't own it. Photos courtesy of Heritage Auctions.
I have a couple of questions first. On the reverse there is what looks like a mark under the 4th pillar. Is this a break in the steps or is it simply something I'm adding to the image? Plus between the 1st and 2ond pillar there is another separation in the steps it looks like the second step. And according to the reg # can you tell me what year was this coin graded or there abouts?
I can't vote on this because the scale doesn't go low enough, with the nicks on the cheek I would have to give it a 65, FS or not I cant tell from the picture, but nice coloring overall. It is just that those marks are in a prime focal area.
The purpose of the vote is to guess what the TPG grade is - not yours. But you can always express your opinion as well.
I wouldn't mind this one for my collection. I'll give it a 7 with full steps. I like the date you picked. How many people know NGC graded this year coin as high as MS68?
Let me just state that I stink at grading. But to me, it seems like the second and third columns are worn. How do you guys know from looking at this coin that it is uncirculated? I would love any help you guys can provide.
Well, let me start by saying it probably got some ridiculous grade, and therefore my grading will seem silly. That being said, I don't think it was any of the above. While the fields are pretty clean, there is a nasty hit on Jefferson's jaw, not to mention the chatter on his forehead. On the reverse, there are nasty black copper spots. I've turned down dozens of extremely nicely toned coins just because I've found these "flyspecks." There's nothing you can do about them, and they only get worse with time. I grade it an MS-64-ick. Let the ridicule begin!
By the way, I am so glad to hear the coin is not yours, Lehigh. I would not have made the above comments if you had not made that disclosure.
67* middle steps look weak at least in the photo. Reverse to front? Is that struck thru in hair? The jaw would grade 66+ comparing to my coins but mine has more there and another nick on the front.
