No matter what it is still a nice coin. What I see are very slight breaks. I tried to circle enough to were you can see what I am seeing. Remember - it does not make me right and it could very well be part of the strike itself. To me those two spots do not show the luster as the rest of the coin. To me it looks like very slight rubs. Still a nice coin and this is just my opinion.
I have absolutely no idea what to grade any of these... but I would knowingly overpay for that toning
Thanks Mark, but I think I'll disagree that those are wear.. well, kinda disagree. Couldn't that be something like shelf wear? Because this is a very clean Merc.
It is okay to disagree - cause it could be shelf wear or it could be a well placed bag mark on the obverse, could be strike. Not positive myself, but this is just what I saw. Plus - not just Mercs, but a lot of true AU58's are very smooth and very eye appealing. No matter what this is a very nice coin.
Too bad we couldn't just all get together and examine it in hand. Maybe I'll meet one of you guys at a show someday.
AU or MS still avery nice Merc with some fine toning. The Merc dime is my favorite with the possible exception of the capped bust.
Beautiful coin ! But I would have to say AU55. There are a couple of areas that have not been mentioned as a sign of wear. And it is these areas that lead me to believe that the color of the bands on the reverse are due to wear and not a weak strike.
Beautiful coin, one way or the other. Can't comment on grading. I'm sure you'll be very careful, but if you're actually going to put that in a Dansco <cringe>, be very, very careful or there won't be any more arguments about AU vs. MS.
I do not think that the darkening on the fasces is wear, but the ax is another story. Regardless and just for my curiosity, what about that makes it a 55 in stead of a 58?
Because I think the darkening on the fasces, the bands, the axe and some of the leaves is all due to light wear. And that's too much wear to justify a 58 - thus 55.
