Hi guys, How would you grade this 1825 half cent? Also, here some pics of a New Jersey cent w/o a date. Low grade. I have never seen one w/o a date. Weak dates, yes, but never one totally without one. Maybe one of the colonial experts can determine if it is legit or a counterfeit? Is the date just gone due to wear? Thanks as usual for your kind help, Eduard
Half cent: EF-40. New Jersey: I haven't the slightest. With any luck, Fish will weigh in with an opinion on both coins. He's a half cent expert, and may know something about your other copper.
I agree EF-cleaned for the half cent. I don't know if cleaning is much of an issue with coins that old because by now nearly all of them have probably been cleaned at least once. I don't know much about grading the NJ coin but I don't think they were well struck to begin with so it might be VF with some corrosion. Treat that as a wild amateur guess.
Would have to go with EF on the half cent, and it does appear to be cleaned. As for the NJ, well, you got me.
Half cent XF40 net VF. And like the rest I do not know anything about the NJ, but maybe G details. Of course that is just a swag. Nice coins Eduard.
I'd say 30 net 20 for light cleaning and marks in the obverse field. Unfortunately I can't help with your colonial, they're not something I've had reason to grab references for. I know there are people who could help with the Jersey, but I'm not sure if any of them hang out on CoinTalk. I might have some McCawley & Grellman catalogs that can help, and if I can find the time tonight I'll see what I can find.
Half Cent - VF-30 Net Grade (cleaned) NJ Cent - G-4 (light corrosion and light clean) I've been trying to attribute it, but this one is a tuffy. I'll let you know if I ever find out what it is. As to the missing date, I would have to say corroded and cleaned which caused this, but I could be wrong. Nice coins!
Thanks guys. I must say i would not have guessed the 1825 1/2 cent had been cleaned, i rather like the looks of it actually. But, that is why i need your opinions, so that i can correctly catalogue my collection. If anybody can offer up any further comments on the New Jersey copper, much appreciated! Eduard
Hi Eduard, I think the NJ piece is a Maris 24-p, R-2. At least, it seems to match lot 440 in my copy of the autumn 2007 Rosa Americana fixed price list number 18.(bought on ebay from numisma). I would guess that it has fine (maybe vf) details but of course is corroded. Note: I'm no expert! Where did that Toad get to, anyway?
Thank you VERY much! This is very helpful. There are so many varieties of the NJ cents. (I was also intrigued by the lack of a visible date, but i guess it was just worn off). Yes, like you i have been also wondering where our resident Colonial Expert (Toad) has gone?
I'll get the remaining ones off next week. I've been swamped! Living in a swamp is one thing but being it is another. Charles nailed the New Jersey. :thumb: They commonly have weakly struck dates so you have to attribute them with everything else and that wasn't hard, since it's in decent condition. Ribbit
