So how was 2008 for your hobby activity ? Any new vistas ? For me, there has been a huge shift from acquiring to learning. First, y'all got me on the "buy the book before the coin" deal. Then I figgered out I'm supposed to read and understand the darn thing. This leaves me moving at the speed of learning... so things have slowed down tremendously ! There is much more to tell. But how about you ? What's new in 2008 ? New friends ? Experiences ? Knowledge ? ...and oh yes... new acquisitions ?
This was my first year as a collector so my entire shoe box-full of coins and filled coin folders were all acquired this year. I have learned a ton just from reading up on things on the internet, being a member of coin talk, and experience from collecting. So basically this has been a numismatically good year.
I've been "hoarding" for a few years now but this is the only time (first year) i've learned so much about "proper coin collection"... thanks to forums like cointalk this is also the year when i started blogging about my coins
I began 08 not having a single thought about this hobby or my past days of collecting. At this time, coins, types, coin storage, grading, toning, and coin photography is about all I think about and read about. (Well, my fantasy team is in the superbowl today so I will take somewhat of a break!) At this point, this is the only hobby I have been focused on for several months and it's good to be back. My collection is miles ahead from where I was in April, when I found cointalk. I suspect 09 will be a busy year, if not busier than 08 as well. 2008 has been a great year for me. Thanks to everyone here that has helped me! :thumb:
.900fine - oh what a year its been! This year I returned to the hobby and met lots of new friends here and in my coin club. Went to a few good sized shows and corresponding Heritage auctions and wallowed in the experience. Bought a few type coins along the way, paid tuition with a few uninformed purchases and then had my Conder token revelation. Reading all that I can on this theme and am acquiring a few along the way (can be seen in the link in my signature). My wife is simulateously happy for me and horrified at how deep my dive (obsession) has been into the hobby. I've learned a hell of a lot in the process and rediscovered a link to my late father who got me started long ago. 2008 has been a watershed point in time for me.
I attended my first coin show and sold a few coins for the first time to see how that side of the hobby works. If you've only purchased coins, I strongly recommend selling a few to experience the other side of the hobby.
Its been a pretty good year for me also for coin collecting. I've also learned alot here on CoinTalk thanks to all of the great members we have here. I've branched out to areas this year that I've never even considered before like the Seated Liberty Half Dimes and Canadian Silver Dollars (1935-1968). My Numismatic Library has grown considerably this year. Like Cloudsweeper said, seeing the hobby from the other side of the table is an experience all its own and should be an experience all coin collectors should have given the opportunity. I also had the chance to do this at a small show. I'm hoping that 2009 will be even better.
Its been my best year as far as numismatics is concerned. My collection grew almost threefold coz I decided to buy more coins and less stamps. This year I for the first time sold and traded coins and notes. Also this is my first year at CT and I learned a whole lot about grading, pricing and numismatics in general. Being from a small town where only a handful of people who collect coins and know anything about it; its been fun actually to make friends here across the globe who share the same passion for coins as I do. Viva la CT:smile
This year I segued from being strictly a modern collector into becoming more broad in my outlook toward the hobby....took the blinders off so to speak. I bought a few books, acquired my 1st bust half and made a ton o' new friends. Hopefully 2009 will hold as much promise as this past year.
2008 saw the completion of my silver Washington quarters and the approaching completion of buffalos, lincolns, and liberty walker halves. I only need one more clad roosevelt to complete the set from circulation. Woohoo. I really need to branch out so that I can get more coins which aren't so darned expensive. Reading CT has also been a real pleasure and I hope my small contributions have been helpful. Happy New Year to all. Ron H.
This past year I acquired my first R-10 (unique) Civil War token. My library has continued to expand, but it is getting hard to find some of the books that I know are out there. Recently I have been picking up some deals on old U.S. copper (mostly large cents, flying eagles and Indians), so I may have to re-enter the regular coinage collecting arena.
This year has been a big one for me. I spent a record amount of days away from home on deployment this year at 140, but was able to collect all the coins of the countries I went to, guilders, yen, and rials. I was bitten by the Bust Half bug this year as well, and managed to pick up 10 specimens as well as Overton's book. My Barber dime collection is still working its way to completion, about a dozen shy, and my type set got its draped bust half and one cent pieces. My Library grew by 6 books this year and some of them are getting harder and harder to find. Hopefully 2009 will see me home a bit more and I can make some headway on that barber dime set.
I started actively collecting coins this year! I knew my family had a few coins left by my grand-uncle (?), and I decided that I'd like to pick up where he left off. This wasn't easy, considering I 1) had no idea where he left off and 2) had no idea about anything involving coins So everything that I have, excluding the few coins that were in my grand-uncle's collection, I picked up since July or August. Here are some of the things I've dabbled in so far.... Lincoln Cents (mostly wheaties, but a few memorials) A Franklin Half w/ Doubling on "America" A Two-cent piece (just bought it this week!) Peace dollars (3-4) Morgan dollars (2) A barber dime (in miserable condition, but it was cheap...probably a mistake) Ancients! (I think I have 11 now? love cleaning the dirty ones to see what they are) A few silver Quarters A Mercury dime A couple of proof Ikes A few Jefferson nickels A few buffalo nickels Large Cents (very recent, a couple of them still active on ebay) I think I'm going to continue collecting Large Cents. They're just too cool. And I think I'll go for a few flying eagles as well, if they're not too pricey....
my love for collecting was revived this year just after my birthday when i was given my first ancient coin as a gift. That just brought everything back and now I'm 37% done my canadian silver dollar set (started this year) and aquired 2 new coins for my canadian small cents collection so a few more to go :thumb:
My year: Found 1914D lincoln, 1924D Lincoln, bought a 1970S small date in BU for $0.35, and found a 1998 wide am in a roll. But then, I lost my job and sold a lot of my coins I loved to survive. Damn, what a great, fantastic ultimately disastrous 2008. :crying::crying: Found my niche though. Wheaties! Eh AZJack?
My year: After collecting stuff and just putting it away in a drawer or album, I finally got interested in learning and collecting. I still consider myself a newbie when it comes to some things, but am acquiring books to learn more and hopefully a means to get pics soon. I have segway'ed into currency right now and have started getting bit by the Large Size US notes.....my coin collecting is hitting the back burner a bit - but when I do by, I pick up what I need for my 3 or 4 different sets I have started. Hopefully 2009 will see me healthier and have time to learn more and grow. Maybe even get the chance to travel a bit and meet a few folks from here..... Smaugy
Hello cwtokenman, I'd like to third the motion. Please let me know if you post the CWT in a new thread. Very best regards, collect89
2008 was the year I got back into collecting after almost fifty years... and it's been a fantastic experience. Things sure have changed since the 1950's (it was so simple back then), and thanks to Coin Talk, I'm re-learning the hobby!
