Here is my new buffalo nickel for the type set. It has some nice orangish toning. What would it grade? Also, is this the overdate? It kind of looks like something is going on with the mm, but I'm not familiar enough with it to know for sure. I bought it as a straight 38-d, so probably not. Anyways, I'm quite pleased with it!:D

I don't know if it's the overdate, as I can't see the obverse. Judging by the reverse, I'd call it MS-63. I would call it MS-65 or better, if it were not for the two prominent scratches on the bison's abdomen.

MS 64 but maybe a little lower, but a great strike. The rim dent hurts this coin

my gosh, you're right! I didn't even notice those. It's amazing all the problems a large well detailed photo can bring out in a coin that you don't even notice in hand.

I think MS-63 is about right.

Well a large photo can also over emphasis hits, but a rim dent is a rim dent. But this is a great coin and the fantastic strike makes it very desirable, IMO.

Okay. I see the obverse. Still don't know if it's an overdate, but I don't see anything to make me think it is.

MS63 seems to be about where it should fall

I think 63/64 is correct. I notice you said overdate, but I think you meant the D/S repunched mint mark. See a snap shot of my D/S - I don't see it on yours, but a close up would help. Forgot to mention that you have a nice coin.

I agree a nicely struck coin , with the rim hit and the reverse scratches MS-63 .
Nice coin , love them Bufallos .

This is an example of a coin which reflects the discussion about strike and grading. I would like to give a coin like this an MS 65 based on the exceptional strike, but the grading standards won't permit it.

I have always graded as what I think the worst side of the coin grades at, in this case, the reverse. I would say 63 but, again, it could grade higher with that kind of strike. Great coin. I don't see anything weird about the date....

No spell checker on this version of firefox. I have no idea why.

BTW - I still say it is a 63, but I was just commenting that the grading system is a bit unfair to this coin.

With the rim hit and the scratches, I think it's a 62, maybe a 63. I would not be shocked if it got a Details or Genuine grade.

Yeah. I have pretty decent eyes, and honestly the rim nick and scratches are nearly imperceptable to the naked eye. I doubt they would be considered damage, but agree that they lower the grade.

Anyways, I had a total brain fart. I meant to say "repunched mintmark", not overdate...lol. I don't think it is, but the mm looks kind of funny. It's definitely not a D/S, but I wonder about the D/D variety? Does anyone have pictures of what that one looks like? It is listed as a variety on the pcgs priceguide. It probably isn't, but doesnt it look like something is inside the MM and right outside of it? Here is a closeup I took under my loupe.

I take that back. I can see the rim nick when the light hits it just right. The scratches are much tougher unless under a loupe.

Are those last two pictures of the same coin? Based on the first one, I'd say a D/D is not out of the question. Judging from the bottom picture, I don't see anything.
