The cent in question is in the first link. I thought it looked like a 1948 but the 8's don't look quite the same in the two links, second link is a 48D. Just wondering what some other opinions were. I linked to them because the photos are rather large. The spacing between the 4 and the 8 look different between the two as well, is this normal for spacing not to be same if they are both 48 D's?

It looks like a damaged 1945 to me.

    Could even be a 1943

when i magnified both images the loops on the bottom of the very visible 8 and the not so visible other number look different. the curve of the lower part of the 8 appears to be wider than the non visible number. however i still believe it is a 1948 because the odds of it being a 43 are a bajillion to 1.

I think the chances of that are pretty slim. :)

I highly doubt its a 43 the 3 in a regular 43 swoop a lot lower than the lower part of the number in question. I really thought it was an 8 but just look too different from the other for me to be sure.

    It's not an 8; it's not a 3 - it's a 5

I agree with the 5, but on ebay it could be a million dollar coin if you billed it as a "rare copper 1943, squished 3 variety" :)

The coin is not a 43 if you look at the red mark I indicated some one tampered with it a hit to try and make it look like a 43 so right there you no you have to exclude that from this discussion a damage coin.

Here's a 1945 d cent the degree of seperation is simular in the numbers. I filled in the 5 to see if there's a simularity with both dates.

What you have to take into consideration the op's cent is in terrible condition in comparision to the other 45 coin. The op's coin has alot of corrosion. I would say it's a 45 tampering job. case closed
