Hello Everyone, So today my Metal Detecting Club started to go out detecting together again. (I did 4 months of solo detecting).. We were at Hunter Island in the Bronx NYC deep in the woods looking for old foundations. I did very well.. I found a second Liberty Half Dollar - 1943 2 Silver Washington Quarters - 1936 & 1944 3 Winged Liberty Head Dimes 1938, 1943 & 1944 1 Barber Dime - 1900 15 - Wheat Cents & Misc clad and metals This neat old Toy Cap Gun Me at the location -
One of the Detecting Club members also found US Silver, a Buffalo Nickel and this... A Gold Signet Ring
Nice finds but Paddy, and I've got to say this, nothing in or around NYC is deep in the woods. If I'm not mistaken, NYC calls them parks. LOL Glad you and your club members had a good time. If you all keep this up there will be no metal left in the ground anywhere up there.
Hunter Island is different from the parks.. It has deer, foxes, chipmunks, skunks and owls! Hunter Island is a 166-acre peninsula and former island in the Bronx, New York City, United States. We follow the walking trails until we see deep depressions or old stone structures in the wooded areas. Those are where we detect! Some haven't been touched in decades!
@paddyman98 Nice day out and nice finds. My friend from Denmark, Ole< recently found a shotgun in the Housatonic River in Massachusetts which empties into Long Island Sound. Turned it into the police and now they are hounding him for more info to see if they can connect it to a crime. Then he found an unexploded shotgun shell and a toy gun. The shotgun was wrecked but the toy gun cleaned up nicely. I can't remember what the makers were of either but the toy gun was extremely intricate and looked very old.
Btw, p98, nice photo..with those piercing eyes, you don't much need a detector...see right through any overburden..!
Keep clear of any skunks or foxes you come across in daylight. Rabies is common in them everywhere Love your detecting finds
We always also douse ourselves with plenty of Tick Repellant when we are in the woods.. We see deer droppings everywhere so ticks can be around Thanks!
I cleaned up the 1943 Liberty Half I found today. Here she is next to the 1942 I found last year. It's in a Half Dollar coin jewelry bezel. I wear it on a silver chain.
Indeed. I was about to search, but you saved me the trouble. I like your finds, especially the Half. If I'm not mistaken, you have found a few more toy pistols in the past. Nice haul. Which digging conditions do you find most lucrative, wet, moist or dry?
Man, that Walker hadn't seen much action before it got buried! And I'll bet finding gold really gets everybody's juices flowing. Probably not more than a gram of actual gold weight in a 10K ring that size, but still...
Thanks! That's my first toy pistol Moist is the best. Better signals! Wet is to muddy and soggy and dry is hard to dig the plugs and holes.
Crazy Update.. 3 guys from our detecting club went back to the same area where I found the Silver Half Dollar Liberty. I also found a Mercury Dime in the same hole. One of then decided to check the same hole and he found 2 Silver Washington Quarters and 1 Mercury Dime.. I was so excited with my find yesterday I didn't bother to recheck the hole.. Always fully check any hole you find coins!
