Hello, Here to get advice on this 1970 D penny. If you notice, the "9" is completely closed up. The penny looks like it did have something splattered on it; but even where those marks are I see no heat type damage to cause the 9 to be closed like that. Thanks!
It is known as a Die Chip. A break on the Die caused that. A piece fell of on the Die and when it struck the blank planchet the metal flowed into the break. that is why it is raised. Neat but nothing major.
The post forming the center of the number (or letter) breaks off and allows coin metal to flow into the void. It happens a lot.
