Unwanted Christmas coins

How many here got coins or accessories for Christmas that they didn't particularly want, didn't need or can't use?

My brother-in-law "knows I collect pennies" so he went to the store down the street from where he works and asked for two of the oldest "pennies" there. Because of that, I wound up with an 1836 Large Cent in G which will temporarily go in my type set since I don't have a pre-1837 Matron Head, but it will be replaced some day with a much better example. The other coin he gave me was marked 1830 on the 2x2, but there is a large gash across the date and the hair style shows it to actually be an 1850, which I don't need anyway, certainly in G and with damage.

Last year I was given the big Third Edition Standard Catalog of World Gold Coins by Krause, et.al., which is nice I suppose, but I don't collect gold coins, except as bullion.

Next year, or for my birthday, I'll just make a list of what would be desirable, along with reasonable costs, and suggest everyone pool their resources and, if they feel compelled to get me something, they'll have a guide for what would make me happy.

I probably shouldn't be such a Scrooge but it's hard to be gracious when someone spends their good money on something that is essentially junk or totally useless and that I have no real use for. I'd rather be gifted socks and underpants.

Yeah, I know. But I'm 69 years old and I've got drawers full of "thoughts" that even the givers don't remember giving to me. Ebay, here I come.

Hey man, my mom actually bought me an Obama dollar! I've been very vocal over the last several months. She just adores him so I know she just wanted to buy one. That's all. More of a gag gift. But you're right. Money thrown away. I wasn't happy.

I didn't neccessarily get any coins I don't want or don't appreciate. But I got a box of world coins that I have not gone through yet, but doubt there will be much of interest to me. I got a 2009 hardbound Redbook, which is all well and good. But since I don't use Redbooks for prices and don't collect Redbooks either, it will probably just sit on my bookshelf. If I need any mintage figures or that sort of info I'll just grab my spiral-bound 2008. I also got an unc 2008 silver eagle, which is great! But I suspect the person who got it for me overpaid.

This year, I got three 1944-s wheat cents..so they will prolly be given away as freebies. I also got some nice silver pieces, but they have all been cleaned and now reside in my junk droar. The only coin that means anything special to me from this Christmas (which is my first collecting coins) resides on my money clip..lol

Not to mention that the Red Book is always dated a year ahead. The 09 is about obsolete and the 2010s will be coming out in a few weeks.

I think buying coins for someone is like buying perfume for women, unless you know what they want, do not try.

I don't know guys. I kinda disagree with this thread. Be humble, it's the thought that counts. Anthony, put those wheats in flips labeled Christmas '08, it will mean something when your 75!
anything I get as a gift, regardless of value or numismatic interests, I put away and label it.

    Here let me elaborate:
(not picking on stainless, just using him for an example)
Someone took the time, to drive to a shop, think about you, decide to get you something you really showed an interest in, and you guys are frowning on it, ungrateful, and hiding them away in drawers and giving them away for free??!
Show some respect to the people that got them for you.
Sure, if it was a over sized T shirt, or socks that itched your feet, or a subscription to "woman's world" magazine I could understand.
But when someone puts the time in to go to a shop and look for a coin they think you might like, and add to your collection.
it's common courtesy to show that some respect.
IMO this would be no different than if AJ was to go dish off all those gifts everyone sent him because they don't fit in his collection, How would you guys feel if you see a gift you sent him, posted on ebay for dirt cheap 2 weeks later? Maybe I'll think twice if there is a gift offering coming up in the near future if that is what the outcome would be.
    NOT IMPRESSED
    IMHO.

Suggestion for next year: Some coin shops offer gift certificates. Problem solved.

I didn't get any coins either, except for a few from one of the very kind members here that hosted an easy contest(s), but I DID receive a SAWEET guitar amp, a new cable, and some nice strings for my acoustic and electric = D super pumped.

Mrs Orc allways buy's me coins and notes for Xmas and my birthday and to be honest even if it was totaly rubbish I would still retain it in my collection, the same goes for any other coin I recieve as a gift, for me it is not so much what it is or the monetery value but the fact that they took the time to buy me something that counts :thumb:

Me too! I have given my family strict instructions for them NOT to buy me any coins..... unless they are gold of course! My inlaws gave me $50 to buy a coin that I wanted. I like that way better.
