I've always wanted a Nero coin with the portrait, this is also my first Julio-Claudian coin (I already have a Nero Prutah, but it's just not the same as a coin with Nero's chunky face!). A lovely obverse with a not-so-lovely reverse. NERO CAESAR AVGVSTVS Seated SALVS 66-67 AD
I bought these 2 , returned one due to a funny repair , looked like Salus holding a bowl instead of a patera
Here is my most recent Nero. He should have ordered more salads with dressing on the side. Nero, 54-68 As Lugdunum circa 66, Æ 30mm., 10.53g. Bare head r. Rev. Victory, draped, flying l., holding, in both hands, a round shield inscribed S P Q R. C 302. RIC 543.
I like Nero’s coinage , especially his sestertius which were nice and large compared to the later sestertii Denarius, salus sestertius ,Roma
Congrats, @JayAg47, on the Nero portrait coin! To me, he looks confident and positive on your example. Here's one with a Jupiter reverse: Nero. AD 54-68. AR Denarius (16.5mm, 3.01 g, 6h). Rome mint. Struck circa AD 66-67. Laureate head right / Jupiter seated left on throne, holding thunderbolt and scepter.
I have a Nero - Salus denarius (RIC I 71, RSC II 316) with a similarly less-than-mediocre reverse. I bought it shortly after I began actively collecting ancient coins a few years ago, and it was my first Julio-Claudian coin as well: I also have a Nero - IVPITTER CVSTOS denarius, purchased in a Frank Robinson auction: @Carl Wilmont, is yours a IVPPITER CVSTOS as well? It looks a lot like mine. Plus I have this very silvery Nero - Alexandria Year 12 tetradrachm from Alexandria, which I bought quite recently:
Just about everyone here seems to have a Nero-Salus denarius! Are they known for being particularly common, or is it just a coincidence?
we all belong to the Nero Salus club...naw...idk Donna....i don't really see alot of'em on the market, but i'd be lying ifn i said i knew.....edit..well heck, you're a member too....
I'm only an honorary member since neither of my items qualify. First is a fourree with SALVS across the field. If that is not bad enough, this is a Rosa fake in pot metal. See Sayles, Classical Deception page182 (#321).
@DonnaML: "@Carl Wilmont, is yours a IVPPITER CVSTOS as well? It looks a lot like mine." Yes, @DonnaML, it is the same type, issued in 66/67 AD to commemorate what Nero believed was the protection of Jupiter the Guardian (Custos) from an overthrow attempt the previous year (The Pisonian Conspiracy). The discontent continued; however, and, in 68 AD, after fleeing Rome following another revolt, Nero would become the first emperor to commit suicide. Here's an earlier Nero portrait coin issued by Agrippa II to observe his re-founding of Caesarea Paneas as "Neronias" in 61 AD. Agrippa II (49/50-94/95 AD), under Nero (54-68 AD). AE (Bronze, 23.4 mm, 14.21 g). Obverse: Laureate head of Nero right. Reverse: EΠI/BACIΛE/AΓPIΠΠ/NEPΩ/NIE (in the time of King Agrippa in Neronias) in five lines within wreath.
