It's been interesting watching this coin change over the years.
This was once a cleaned white coin. It's not worth cracking and dipping again. It's what it is. It's a really strange look.

That is strange... I have a few counterfeits that look like that after the silver plating wears off. I really like toned coins, but this one is plain ugly!

Ouch. That's unfortunate. Are the colors in the picture close to how the coin appears in-hand?

No No No, It's got a bit more ugly to gain. It's been fun watching it.
The color is really close if you figure the slab gasket is white.
This is what made me buy it years ago.

Do you have other pictures? How long has this taken? Almost looks like it was burnt.

It's interesting that apparent die polishing has taken away the top of the first S in STATES and the top of the O in OF, but apparently has not affected any other details.

Now I love unique coins and toning in general, but that coin is hideous. I have always hated the Seated Liberty design and this coin is not doing anything to change that. Maybe it will turn black and you can sell it to Pat Braddick. :goof:

I think it's cool looking...in an ugly sort of way. But, I'd hang on to it just because it's neat. :D

If you can locate someone who likes the way it looks, sell it to them with the caveat that you can't guarantee what sort of damage lurks below the black.

That coin is a sight for sore eyes, it makes my eyes sore looking at it.

My advice is to show it to the guys at NCS and ask them for their advice. There may be something they can do to neutralize the surface of the coin or they may just recommend leaving it alone.

    Very best regards,
