    Hello everyone- thanks for looking,

this caught my eye scrolling/trolling on eBay for some odd ones to add to my collection. I have gone through my reference books and searched the internet and i can’t seem to locate it anywhere. Any assistance would be appreciated.

looks like a projectile through the forehead to the back

    a. Is there such a variety called the assignation variety?
    b. Does anyone know of any other examples?
    c. Is this a “horse of a different color”(for any oz fans)
    d. Any value estimates?

    thanks

Interesting die gouge. Maybe you could check some Lincoln Cent sites like www.lincolncentresources.com to see if it’s listed. Usually, unless it’s listed in the Cherrypickers guide, there really isn’t much, if any added value. Chances are, if it's not listed, then there really isn't much interest. I would definitely keep it if I found it, but not sure if I would buy the coin you posted (It looks like some dirt and organics on the surfaces that would benefit from and acetone wash, but who knows if there is damage under it).

No.. If you meant Assassination then that would be morbid.
That's not how Lincoln was shot o_O

is it raised, or incused? looks incused in the picture, maybe a close up of it will help determine, but it's not a die gouge unless it's raised.

Looks like a sharp edge scraped along the coin, hit the forehead and skipped over it and then made contact again on the backside before bouncing again, but that's just this one man's opinion of it based on the picture. Also that the brass isn't bright means it would have happened a long time ago, and the scratch could have been more visible across his head and been worn away.
looks like there is a raised and incused below it, and this might be metal fold over of an old wound impersonating a die gouge.

I'd be skeptical unless much better pictures provided.

Up close and personal. looks like an old cut and not a die gouge to me,the incuse mark under it is concerning and if it was on the die, the head wouldn't interrupt it. IMO. And WAAAAAAAY OVERPRICED for it either way.....

Thanks to everyone for all the information. Yes paddy it was listed as Assassination variety,(darn auto-correct) not my words? I appreciate the information. I thought the price was way over the top (eBay)as well, but I figured there would be folks here with way more institutional knowledge, and I could not locate any previous documentation concerning such.

    thanks again to everyone

Aha, another victim of autocorrect. I battle with it all the time. Really had me scratching my head over "assignation" variety. LOL

(Lincoln was shot in the back of the head, anyway, if we want to needlessly point out morbid comparisons.)

Someone was listening to "Jumpin' Jack Flash" by the Rolling Stones a bit too much..."I was crowned with a spike right through my head..." That's what I thought of when I first saw this...

A very minor thing on this coin. Neat and interesting but no added value.
