This is the second 1909 VDB I've found that looks like it has a weakly struck S in one of the 4 locations the correct Mint Mark is struck. Thoughts?

Sorry but no, the eyes will play tricks especially when your mind is wishful!

Pareidolia - look up the word as that is what is happening on these coins for you.

Since you did take some pretty good pictures, you can clearly see there is no S. Sorry, there isn't an S hiding on that coin.

No S, sorry.... and yes many of us have had this sensation , but it is pareidolia as mentioned. Jim

Sorry, you're imagining things. It's a phantom. I concur with the pareidolia diagnosis.

Keep looking. A coin that well struck wouldn't have a phantom mint mark.

What it is im looking at. Is it some sort of mark from the planchet that causes a spot of the coin to be raised and my mind tries to make it into an S? I thought the point of coin forums was for more experienced people to share knowledge and help others out, not just constantly patronize people

    I can't see an s or a shadow of an s...and I tried!

The only picture where I can maybe if I try really hard see an S is picture #5. Still think it's just my mind wanting to see it.

Wishful thinking perhaps but I too see a very faint phantom S on at least two of the photos. Good luck trying to prove it to others. Be safe

Thanks for the interesting post, I learned a new vocabulary word today, pareidolia. Now I can finally stop playing those old Beatles' records backwards.

Aside from what others said, "weakly struck S" is not possible. The S could be polished off the die, or filled with grease, but just that one tiny spot on the coin can't be "weakly struck" when the rest of the coin isn't.
