@AnYangMan announced the creation of the leaderboard earlier today in this comment. What an excellent idea! Seems worth a thread. But new fat birds (to borrow a phrase from Doug) have entered the fray in recent times, so we need an update. In particular, @Edessa's monster has raced to the top and knocked me off the podium! :arghh: Well done, Edessa!

Here's the current top-10 list as far as I know:

    1) @Edessa 97.75g
    2) @PtolemAE 95.66g
    3) @Silverlock 95.60g
    4) @Paul M. 94.14g
    5) @David@PCC 93.27g*
    5) @Severus Alexander 93.27g*
    7) @Pellinore 92.26g
    8) @TIF 91.8g
    9) @Broucheion 91.17g
    10) @AnYangMan 90.53g
    *tie

    Honourable mentions (90+ g):
    @dougsmit 90.00g

Please post your corrections and related coins. But bear in mind that the next person to crack the leaderboard will knock @dougsmit off. (How could you!! --EDIT: it's happened. But I'm keeping an honourable mention list. :angelic:)

My parting comment as I stumble off the podium: If mine was good enough for Dattari, it's good enough for me! :p

P.S. I've also created a "leaderboard" tag in case someone else wants to create one. Heaviest cast coin? Tiniest hemitartemorion? Ugliest denarius? The sky's the limit...

P.P.S. No @Alegandron, your fancy-schmancy dekapentashekel does not qualify for this one!! ;)

My main concern is that we will have trouble finding a wrapper for the roll when we get 20 (or how many of these makes a bank roll???).

I love this idea! I have nothing that comes even close but look forward to seeing what people have to offer.

And Doug, I don't think these would ever fit in a bank roll. I think perhaps a dump truck would be better to haul them around with:

LOL, hmmm... it IS North African, contemporaneous to Egypt’s... AND a more famous Historical Person... as my 3-year old Grandson would say, as he is kicking the ground: “You guys are MEANIES!”

    :D :D :D

Nice! After a quick perusal of MA-shops, the heaviest I could find was in the 70s.

I think we need some pictures of the top 10...

Yeah, but of all the Ptolemaic hockey pucks shown on CT yours has the best strike, prettiest patina, and most desirable pedigree :). Dibs if you ever sell :shy::D.

Here's mine, FWIW. It has a typical shallow strike. The pedigree is interesting though :).

I've tried several times to get good (read: flattering) photos of this coin-- not happy with any of them.

Ok, current winner. Someone do better! Heavier coins are out there!

    Most definitely! Let's see 'em!

I dunno... @Edessa's is pretty gosh darn sweet! As for selling... my body temperature will have to drop very considerably (and permanently) before that happens. :D

Well, mine is 8mm thick... so to match the average bank roll I guess we're looking at 9 coins? We've got enough already! Our top 9 add up to roll weight of 840g, or about the same as a large can of tomatoes. Yikes. :wideyed: The good news is yours won't fit in the roll so you get to keep it. :D

BTW, @TIF and @dougsmit - do you have a second decimal place for us?

Uhm, yeah... Changing my dibs from Sev's to this one. Or both! :D

    Fantastic coin!!

I don't think so-- it's at the bank. Next time I'm there I'll weigh it.

Pfew! Just barely scraping into the top 10 with my crusty beauty! But losing to that mega-monster of @Edessa is surely no shame. Thanks @Severus Alexander for making this an official thing!

For the sake of completion (even though I already posted it earlier this week):

I have had loser here longer than I have had a scale with two digits and I sincerely doubt that all of our scales are calibrated the same so that hundredths place may not be significant. Unfortunately, I just reweighed mine using my current scales and only got 90.00g so I am gone from the list now anyway. Sorry for the false advertising. For the record, My personal daily weight varies more than my coin. Perhaps I can feed it breakfast and get back on the list???

I suggest any of you with 'accurate' scales try weighing the same coin ten times and see what differences you see. My coins before about 2000 were weighed on purchase using a cheap balance beam scale. Since then I have had three different electronic scales which usually calibrate using a 100g weight which is not the best if you are weighing mostly denarii and obols. Does anyone have a scale that has a procedure allowing calibration with a 10g weight? Currently my scale tends to agree within .01 with coins I buy from CNG but not always varying in the same direction. Who remembers using balances in glass/wood cases that protected from drafts? How many of us use or scales in rooms with fans or AC vents?

I found interest in the above offering from eBay for a cheap scale that includes 100g and 10g weights. If you read their sales text, you will see that the 100g is for calibration but the 10g is only for 'verification'. They state clearly:
    • One 10 gram standard weight. You can use this weight to verify your scale. Calibration can only guarantee the correct reading at full capacity. Verifying your scale with a different weight is always recommended after calibration.
I still weigh and record ny new coins to the .01g number but I am not a believer in that last digit. I do wonder if we bought 100 of these scales with calibration weights and weighed all the weights just how much variation we would find. Asking .01 accuracy from a $15 scale is a bit much.
