    Good morning folks.
As part of a recent estate collection I just purchased, I am now the owner of several rolls of uncirculated 1982 and 1983 coins. Some of the rolls are bank wrapped, some have dealer provenance, some are just in tubes. So my question is this: should I open and investigate them looking for truly high grade examples or should I leave them intact as they are. Some of the nickel tubes are open but the quarter tubes and half tubes are tightly taped.
They don’t fit with my collection so I intent to move them along, either thru the for sale forum here of thru eBay, but was seeking input on the best way to optimize my ROI.
I fully understand these coins are tougher to come across in UNC condition because there were no mint sets produced in ‘82 and ‘83.

I see tubes and rolls of face value only!... either in rolls or broken open.
Unless you find someone who thinks there maybe varieties, the nickels most probably have been searched, as they are in tubes.
And those years as a variety collector are mimimal varieties nothing to write home about.
The 82 P tube looks to be an older tube that most probably has pvc in the plastic.

If you come across actual uncirculated rolls from 1982-1983, I'll gladly give you double FV for them -- and then flip them for a multiple of that on eBay.

As far as opening the "tightly taped" rolls, I assume they were "tightly taped" by the last person who searched them for high-quality examples. None of these are in any kind of "original packaging". I'd take a look.

Just curious OP, how much in face value did the original purchaser pay $546 for?

I see no better than face value for this lot. If one were extraordinarily fortunate, they may pull out an MS70, but that is so doubtful. What we're seeing looks like common coins worth face.

Everybody who's saying "face value", please look at value listings for MS 1982-1983 business strike coins, and at completed eBay auctions for rolls from those dates.

There were no mint sets issued in 1982 or 1983. Uncirculated examples are hard to come by, and command a premium, even in lower MS.

The market value is what matters, and this is not always determined by catalogs or not even by people who know (experts), but rather by what a certain amount of people is willing to pay.

Unless I miss my guess, this Hamilton Bank is located in Los Angeles (310) telephone area code. Can't believe all have not been searched, although some of the wrappers appear to be older than others. Crap shoot.

Thing is, the previous purchaser has already paid the big speculative premium on these. Since he couldn't take them with him, OP gets to check them at little or no risk.

In my opinion, rolls that are labeled have not only been gone through, but usually done by a collector, so unless new "errors" have been discovered recently, I think it's a safe bet that they are not worth going through. I'd sell them as is. But that's just me.

You have nothing to lose. Open them, look them over, put them back and sell them! My opinion only. Good luck.

I'd give the 1982 halves a look over for the 'no fg' variety. If that roll is in relatively high grade, look thru the rest as well for any gems.

...I thought about it for another moment. I I'd just go thru them all.

If selling them on ebay, I would rather know I am selling an actual roll of uncirculated coins.

    Indeed!!!

'82-P quarters often go for far more than Redbook on eBay.

Dealer wholesale on the '83-P roll is $550.

The coins on that invoice now total $1615.

    That's what dealers pay.

Don't expect that at your corner coin shop though since they might tell you to just spend them.

By the by. The '83-D dimes look nice but they always do so no premium. The '82-P quarters look like they might have some valuable coins in the roll. The '83-P roll might bring a premium as well.

I'm guessing you got them at a pretty good price.

Jeff you can say look at the book value try getting it.I paid off a car with uncirculated Jefferson nickels bags of them......I get bags all the time....dad worked for the fed.
I search but wasn't good of taking them back to the bank.
When I got married ,my parents made me come get all the bags.
So I paid off the car.
I gave John 45 slabed proofs not 2 months ago , not 1 sold ....registery grades nada, not his fault no market for them....at all.
The book may say X amount but try getting.....that amount. And if someone wants them dump'em asap.
I probably have a few boxes of nickels rolls up staris now in fact I know I do.....to lazy to take to the bank.

Call me old fashioned, but I can never fathom the idea that common, currently circulating coins with mintages of over half a billion could ever be considered worthy of a premium. Not saying they aren't, just makes no sense to me.

This gets to the very heart of the reason that they are valuable. Nobody could believe these were desirable in '82/3 either so nobody bothered to save them. Today the most dealers are out of stock on all of these coins but it matters little because buyers think they are common and undesirable so they buy something else instead.

Meanwhile nice examples of this date sell for far over catalog prices because Redbook thinks coins made in the billions can't be worthy of a premium. Of the few collectors who seek these "common" coins many are unwilling to pay far over catalkog so it matters not that dealers are out of stock.

See the two posts immediately preceding yours.

I don't collect these, so I don't have my own opinion about their value. All I know is what I see in price guides, and what's sold on eBay.

If I can buy a roll for face value, and then sell it for several times that in an auction or at a storefront... I don't CARE what it's "really worth". I only know that I'm not going to turn around and sell it for face value.

So I decided to list the coins on eBay and see why I could get. I then decided to pull a couple of the listings down, crack open the tubes and take a few photos of the coins so buyers would have a better impression of what was inside (didn’t do this to the bank rolls, just the tubes).
I’ve included some photos below. In the meantime, an eBay buyer contacted me and offered $475 for the roll of 82p quarters...so that’s nice.

@cladking, any further opinions on value based on these photos?
