Guys I have some Proof set. The value of the Proof set if I break it up is 2 times more then if I keep it together. Any advice would be appreciated. I am not selling. I just would like to know for further knowledge.
+1 I agree with my amphibian brethren. Keep them in the original mint sealed containers. Makes the best sense.
It may appear that the set is worth more individually (coin price listings) but that's only if one of the break outs grades very high. When you break open the proof set, if you don't individually grade the coins (costs more than the coins are worth) you now have impaired proofs. It's a slippery slope. And without knowing what year this set is, and photos of both sides, there's no way to determine what the correct move it.
I am asking for knowledge sake. I wanted to inventory the coins and decided to check the individual value and discovered they were worth more separately.
This isn't always true. An impaired proof is one that has wear and tear, not just because it has been cracked out of the OGP.
There is a big difference between worth as stated in published listings and what you can actually sell something for.
Yes, it would need to circulate. But my concern is that if they are broken out and not protected, they will become impaired.
Breaking them out, you have 5 coins (or more) to sell, along with 5X the seller's fees and 5X the pain in the posterior! And that's assuming they ALL sell. Keep 'em together.
And more than two times the headache to get rid of as Kentucky pointed out. The reason the prices of the individual coins add up to more than the value of the set is the "dealer nuscience fees" that have to be added to each coin to make up for all the extra effort and expense of marketing them.
