Can some of you dealers or more experienced collectors help me come up with a value on this coin (both wholesale and retail)? It appears to have G details. But, as you can see, it is holed. Does this cut the value by half, a quarter? Any help you guys can offer is much appreciated.

It's probably still a $400 coin to the right buyer.

Some collectors love to collect "holed" coins, and it a bidding war, it could fetch more. JMO.

Are there any really good die marriages of this date?

I don’t think there’s anything particularly rare for 1799. Is the mist common date actually

I appreciate the help, folks. $300-$400 seems to be the range. I'm not going to sell it. I'm just going through some coins for my Father in Law trying to help him determine the value of what he has.

Welcome. If I get bored I’ll try to attribute the die variety though others could probably do it quicker

Holed coins do not appeal to me at any cost. It damages the character and originality of the coin. My opinion only.

I used to think that way, but more and more I've grown to accept the holing because most of the time one can get a pretty good deal on a mid to upper grade coin. It's all in the beholder, so there is no right or wrong.

I agree with the $300-400 assessment. There are a handful of holed 1799 dollars in Heritage's prices realized that back that up.

I thought about getting a collection together of holed early coins just for fun

I like that idea - and it would be an interesting collection to look at because of the wide variety of ways people do that. Maybe include coins that are mounted as jewelry. There's one coin, a pretty rare dohlenega variety that I need to complete part of a collection - one that had be jewelry mounted came up on heritage recently - I bid on it but the price went way over what I could do. Sometimes rarity and other issues, like the condition of the coin asside from the mounting damage results in bids you wouldn't expect. I'd be happy to get that issue with a hole in it if the details of the coin were still decent. But FWIW I would prefer it with the hole, as opposed to repaired.

In the same group of coins I was looking at for my Father in Law there was also a 1813 Capped Bust Half that had been holed. That must have been a thing in the 50’s or something. That seems to be the time that they acquired them.

I’ve got a couple holes coins kicking around. A seated dollar a barber half and a few half dimes
