Morgan Dollars (1878-1921)

I almost have the complete set of these Morgan (Philadelphia Mint) dollars, but I am missing a few.

All are in, at least, fine condition. I am a novice coin collector so I have no idea what would be the 'best' condition just from looking at them.

I have the complete set except for: 1892, 1893, 1894, 1895, and 1901.

I am looking at prices for these on www.pcgs.com and i am pretty astounded. can i really expect to get some of those prices for these coins?

Welcome tree, it is very possible you could be looking at high prices for your coins. It really all comes down to the grade of the coin.
I would suggest you post some pictures for us to assist you in grading your coins.
Most philly Morgans dont bring in too much, until they hit the really high grades.

 

i will do so very soon. having trouble not getting major reflection on these pictures as they are in plastic cases.

 

well, the plastic cases thing would typically be a good sign. Are they professionally graded? Or are the holders just typical airtights?

 

just typical air tights. they have not been graded yet. i am worried about sending them away to get graded and also getting swindled by local coin collector stores.

 

Well, Like I said, and like you're doing, you're best bet is pictures. They may not be worth sending away for grading. It can be quite costly.

here is a pic without the plastic covering the coin. this will probably make it easier on you people! In my opinion, all the coins are in about this same shape. some a little less, some a little more.

No, you won't get anywhere near those prices if you sold your coins. Those prices reflect coins traded in PCGS holders at the extreme high end. Take that high figure and reduce it by about 30-40% and thats what you can expect to get in most cases based on that scale.

I couldn't give you a precise grade based on photos. But, even if you send them to PCGS and they slab them, you won't be able to sell at the prices listed. Those are the high prices paid by collectors for those coins. No dealer will buy them at those prices, or they couldn't make a resale profit. Are you planning to sell them, or just curious about their value?

 

I received these from my grandfather and he wished them to stay in the family. I do have college bills piling up so I may think about selling the extras I have for certain years, and hoping maybe one day to get a complete collection. For the most part, I am just curious.

 

If it were me... here's what I would do.

First, get an idea of what you have. Uncirculated Morgans are a dime a dozen, and some are surprisingly cheap. Meanwhile some are very valuable.

Get a list of what dates you have, we'll go from there pricewise. Also, common date Morgans, unless MS65+, are not, IMO, worth slabbing.

the dates I have are listed in the first post in this thread. I just spoke with my father and he has another 50 coins, so maybe the years we are missing are in his set.

 

You're only missing 1892-1895 and 1901. So are you saying you have one from each of the other years in the series, or do you have all of the years AND mintmarks?

 

not the mintmarks!! the ones I have seen were minted in Philadelphia. I do have a New Orleans extra one.. I am going to check out what my father has now and make an updated list, I will post it soon.
